I picked up a DK on the cheap, but it has some abuse. This one I can't decide whats the best to do. Its the wooden piece above the control panel that I think the monitor bezel sits in? I'm not near my DK so I can't really confirm it. Anyway, mine (and I'm guessing everyone elses) appears to have been covered in some sort of black material, not painted. The abused part is that someone has peeled most of it off. Is there a simple replacement for this? Or should I just paint it black?

EDIT: Ah, gotta like remote file servers....I found the original picture I took. You can see a few strips of the material left on the top edge of that piece of wood. Any ideas? Paint it black and call it a day?

Thanks

Yes that piece has a very thin black laminate on it... its not vinyl and its not formica. You can paint it black and it will be fine... the only problem is if it when the laminate was picked off of it the surface may be rough, you would need to prep it first. The good thing is the piece can easily be removed for refinishing.

i just re finished mine this week. paint sand paint some more..it comes out looking great!

or go to home depot and pick up some thin black laminate.

Yea, it didn't seem like laminate to me, but I could easily be wrong. [edit: probably because it seems very thin to me]

I think its some sort of particle board underneath and didn't know if I could get it painted and looking very nice.

Thanks!

I haven't looked - is that piece attached to some brackets? I assumed it was sandwiched between the sides and I wouldn't be able to remove it.

Thanks

Piece is laminate covered plywood and can be removed. I have laminated them, painted them and covered them in stiff black adhesive vinyl. Painting is the easiest method.

Thanks guys - I did indeed remove the piece. Mine had some glue (or maybe just caulk?) around the screws and such, so maybe when I first looked at it months ago I assumed it was glued into the sides.

That piece and putting on new sideart is all I'm doing on this "restore" (well - along with a sound/monitor capkit).

My small "bezel nest" piece needs the same treatment(missing big chunks) ..Problem is home depot doesnt sell small pieces of laminate. My CP had chips out and it was still a pain to sand/fill/sand/fill...

I'm taking mine to a family member that builds custom cabinetry, so he'll probably throw it on the giant "conveyor belt" sander and then pull some laminate scraps out of a pile for such a small job. I should add "hopefully".

The problem I see is the t wood is VERY grainy and impossible to sand "paint ready" smooth. It will stil need a thick layer of wood filler/bondo :-(
