donkey kong part out

i have never burned ANYTHING that could be fixed. I have given away lots of cabs i have copied that were in usable condition. I bought a very rough Robotron from seawolf, copied it, and attempted to repair the bad one. replaced 6" all the way around on it. Got real tired of blending in the new pieces with bondo, he asked what i was doing with it, i said trashing it, he asked for it, so i'll save it for him till his next trip.

I gave probably 5 cabinets to Jpopson, i have one here to give to Rturbo, i DON'T kill good cabs, i kill shit that has long outlived any hope of repair. Matter of fact, i do have two original quantum cabs here. One is beyond hope. the second one is very close to that, but i'm going to save it. Probably take me 30 to 40 hours, but Seawolf wants it saved, and i like a challenge.

ON to the subject at hand. Dude probably jumped the gun parting his game, but ultimately, it's his game and he can do what he wants. The slotcar hobby is much like it is here, it needs put in perspective.. adults playing with toy cars.. adults playing with video games.

and Van, your pm box was full, so i can't respond to the nasty pm you sent me so i'll just say it here, "FUH-Q!"

I can't see what Chris posted as he is now #2 on my ignore list.... but I'll take a wild guess that it is yet more derision aimed at me.

Chris -- why exactly do you lash out at anyone who speaks up about a game being destroyed, even when you have nothing whatsoever to do with it? I had posted that I was looking for gutted Nintendo cabinets, so this was my business.

Are you worried about your game-smashing rights being limited?

Perhaps you and the other cabinet burners can secceed from VAPS and set up your own dumpster-filled plantation where you can do what you want with your personal property free from scrutiny. That plan worked so well for the South...

Then why would you joke about burning games on this thread? The DK cabinet in question could have been restored and there were multiple potential buyers.

Well this thread is sure going places.

When joking about burning a game becomes actually burning a game, then I'll worry about it.

it's just the whole notion of trying to look cool for the other idiots while trying to get a reaction by mentioning the burning of games that is retarded. Even if said games are trashed.

Really Van who (other than you and a small handful of others) gives a shit about burning a video game? Are we threatening to steal your car, burn your house down, harm your family or really threaten your life to the point where you feel it necessary to send private or public messages full of insults just because somebody disposed of something in a way you didn't approve of?

This can be argued back and forth for either side and i honestly feel for you guys on the hardcore preservation side as it's always you that get shit on the most in these type of threads. Look at all the banter that has gone on between Arcrevival and i, it is what it is and it's never gonna change. He has a strong opinion that i'd be more than happy to discuss but it's never gonna happen.

Most members here are happy to sit back and watch what happens without saying a word for fear of being ripped a new asshole for their belief. You Van are not one of em and unfortunately for you, neither am i so i guess we can add each other names to the hate list.

Just remember what I always say Van, this place is to preserving classics what Taco Bell is to Mexican food, sometimes it can fill the craving, but it sure as Hell won't ever be mistaken for carne asada. Ultimately, I blame Greg. He obviously approves of it or he would put a stop to it. But what he cares more about than games being preserved ( and this is dead serious, not a joke ) is page hits, quantity of games listed on VAPS ( i deleted mine since it's not much of a preservation society anyway) and number of members ( even if a lot of them are hacks). It's too bad he is just a trophy collector and apparently not much of a preservationist.

I have seen you post this before. The problem is that KLOV is the ONLY place for Mexican food. Don't get me wrong, I am on your side when it comes to preservation. That being said, where is the "carne asada" located? I am curious where else there is any kind of information gathered and assembled with people that will help you restore ANYTHING like there is here.

I think it is reality check time. Have you been to the BYOAC forum? Have you ever seen a castrated QBert? Here you go pal! Check out this sweet action:

THOSE people need your help. Go over there and scream at those kids for their stupidity. They don't even save the hardware. They just throw the monitor and everything else into the trash and throw in an old Magnavox TV.

They pretty much do this to every game they buy.

At least r5g is selling off the parts, right?

Forums are not easy to run. It is his forum. If you think it is so easy, start a forum. It is not easy.

I am on your side in regards to preservation all the way. But if this place is so bad, and is the "Taco Bell" of Mexican food, then why do you keep posting and hanging out here? Same reason as the rest of us. Because love it or hate it, KLOV is the only place like it. :)

Unfortunately for your analogy, the arcade restoration hobby is more in line with classic car enthusiasts... and I doubt some dude who just crushed a straight '69 Charger chassis would be supported on the MOPAR forums.

not really.. more like someone scrapped a smashed up rusty charger.

Exactly my point.

By your standards, any car that showed some rust is only fit for parting out and crushing... and if that were the case there likely would be no Chargers left to restore.

Fortunately for car enthusiasts, scrap yards kept most of the rusty cars intact... which is more than can be said for this crowd.

I have an Armor Attack that has been restored to near-perfect condition. It came to me literally falling apart from water damage and covered in horse shit. I've no doubt that you would have considered it beyond saving... and yet I have a beautiful Armor Attack.

you restored a cabinet with water damage AND COVERED IN HORSE SHIT.damn that's dedication especially for an armor attack

A real question..........
I feel like I try to help out the community and that I want to save the games just like everyone else does, but at what point is a cabinet to bad to fix? I'm not pulling your leg or being a smart ass….I really want to know what I am supposed to do. I have a Run & Gun cabinet in my garage that is a total scrap pile as far as I am concerned, but can I burn it or should I store it for a few years and hope that someone may want it for something? I have no use for this thing, but I am also not going to store it just so I don't piss people off.

It's your machine and you are under no obligation to make anybody happy, do whatever the hell you want with it.

He's just wondering what the general consensus is, not whether he has the right to.

I say if there's considerable water damage, and it's not rare, burn it. But if it's a Sundance or some other cab that's very hard to find/rare, then keep/give to someone to restore. But that's my ethics... I think rarity plays a huge factor in it.

Tempest cabs are fairly common, but I bought one in California and have been slowly restoring it, and it even had a huge chunk of the wood missing out of the side...

but at what point is a cabinet to bad to fix?

It totally depends on the game. I believe any original game is worth saving... especially anything early or rare. Some more than others, of course. If you don't have the patience or skill set to do the work, someone else probably does. So if it's too much trouble for you, finding a good home for it is the right thing to do... at least in my opinion.

As for Chris' reply (which I unfortunately saw quoted above) my drunk, redneck uncle also thought it was his right to beat his dog senseless with a rolled-up magazine.

Anyway. We're partial to Cinematronics XY games here, so I will always put in the effort to save one, regardless of condition. Finishing a Star Castle now. Inside edges were completely busted out to the t-molding channel all the way up to the panel on both sides. Some idiot had then glued badly-cut, 1/8" masonite to the particleboard, spray-painted it black, and trimmed down the molding to match. Nice. We removed the hack, cut 3/8" particleboard to the correct profile, glued it in, filled the chips and gaps with bondo, sanded it flush, re-cut the channel, and patched the inside edge with black morocco vinyl. With new t-molding on, it will look perfect again.

Almost anything can be restored.

Exceptions are any cabinets with toxic mold -- which must be parted out and burned -- profound water or termite damage where the original wood is destroyed beyond possible repair, or any cabinet where there are odors that cannot be contained.

Fortunately for my Armor Attack, horse shit washes off vinyl no problem :)

Well this was certainly cartoon worthy thread :D
But really why this post???

There were several "part outs" listed over the past week a Space Invaders
and a Spy Hunter come to mind. With no offer that I recall to buy as a whole.
Was a SH ok because the parts are harder to come by?

The attacks in this thread are more geared towards Chris and DP which I doubt
have ever parted a DK (though I could be wrong :D)
Nothing against your stands on it but it looks a little extreme and hypicrytical sometimes
like a tree hugger chained to a tree that needs to come down.
