I am currently in the process of restoring a Donkey Kong cabinet into a Donkey Kong 3 and cannot find the Sanyo 20EZ monitor anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions for a monitor I could possibly switch out for the Sanyo? The Arcade Shop has a conversion kit that will work for VP2 monitors which I believe are any Vision Pro monitors.

That looks like it will convert the colors as well as amplify the sound so it should work for any standard resolution monitor, though it may take a bit of modifying to make it work.

Depending on what that whole conversion set up ends up costing you, you might be able to get an original sanyo shipped to you for a similar price. You can usually find some on Ebay or the buy forum on here.

Its such a pain to find a Sanyo anywhere, and if someone does have it the price ranges from $100-$200 and its a 30 year old monitor! I have heard the Sanyo 20EZ monitor is a real pain too so I don't know what I should do. I did find a site though that claims you can use an LCD monitor, so there is hope for that.

Sanyo 20EZs are great monitors. They'll likely outlast any walmart LCD you put in there. Plus, LCDs look like ass when you play old arcade games on them.

You'll need two adaptors to make this work with an LCD. This adaptor inverts the colors and amplifies the sound coming from the DK boardset. However, the signal coming out of this is still standard resolution. The LCD will need a signal that it can sync with, so a CGA to VGA (or higher) adaptor will be needed as well unless you can find an LCD that sync's with the lower resolution.

I, too, suggest putting a standard arcade monitor in the cabinet instead of an LCD.

Alright, thanks for the help guys. I will probably just stick with the Sanyo, I will just have to wait and keep looking.

It wouldn't be a true Nintendo restoration without a Sanyo. Sanyo's are one of the best arcade monitors available. They are out there, you just have to be patient and look for them.

On another note, I've got a DK3 cabinet that I use for a Donkey Kong.

Its got a DK3 tag on the back, but I'd much rather have a DK tag. Would you care to swap?

I don't want to speak for KevinMullins, but I think he meant...

Use whatever arcade monitor you want.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
CRT...15khz...."arcade" monitor.

And Sanyo 20EZ's are awesome monitors, beautiful pictures, generally very little burn in on them. Yes they are 30 years old, usually due for a rebuild, and after that they will then go another 30 years most likely. This is why people usually don't want to part with them, especially if they have already been rebuilt.

The Sharp models use din Nintendo's are good candidates too. ;)

Ok, I'm glad I am getting all of this feedback, and everyone's opinion. I just saw on one site that the 20EZ was difficult to deal with and what not. But you guys know more about arcade games than I do so I'll take your words for it.

If you did put a monitor other than a Sanyo in the then it would be cheaper and easier to just throw a jamma harness with adapter in there and be done with it.
The adapter inverts the colors and provides the amp for sound.

I don't know much about the process, but if you can't find a Sanyo you could buy a chassis and replace the tube with your own. You would have to research this thoroughly of course.

The problem is in a Nintendo the sound is also ran through a small amp mounted on the monitor frame and the original Nintendo boards put out an inverted video signal. I have not heard or seen great results with emulating the color inversion. You may be able to get a standard monitor for cheaper but when including the price of an inverter/amp and the hassle of rewiring to accomodate it. It just makes more sense to go with the original. especially when the original Sanyo has such a better pic than any newer china made junk CGA monitor you may run across for cheap. Also, dont forget the original iso puts out 100V.
Here's one for you

Already working and everything. Not cheap though

Hey dudes, what is the difference between the Sanyo 20EZ and the Sanyo 20EZV?? I found a couple EZV's for sale and I am unsure about the difference between the two. Somebody please explain to me what the difference is. Thanks!
