Does this ever happen to anyone?

I don't know if this has ever happened before, but the last time I powered on my Donkey Kong, there was no "L=00" in the upper-right corner where there should have been. It was there earlier that day. I just noticed this while reviewing some video that I shot.

I can't check right now to see if it's still like that (because I have Junior wired up at the moment), but is it normal to get no "L=00" sometimes? I have a sinking feeling that there should be no "sometimes" when it comes to this (it's the level indicator, not a wild barrel), so if anyone has a thought on this, I'd like to hear it.

It was bugging me so I hooked it back up.

"L=00" is back again. So it appears to have fixed itself, for now.

What a bizarre thing. I am very curious as to what could possibly cause this. Everything working/running normally, except for that one, isolated thing.

I'm gonna throw out a wild guess: it has something to do with a RAM chip. It seems like that kind of data would be held in RAM. Maybe a chip that's loose, or going bad, or (?)

If it was a RAM issue then it would be causing more problems than that. Maybe it's just too dark to see, that picture is much darker than the other (look at the difference with the artwork on the bezel).

Just turned it on and L=00 was missing again!

Started the game and L=01 appeared, and incremented correctly when I reached L=02.

Weird.

Everybody watch your DKs! I'm really curious to know if this happens to anyone else. For all I know this is normal behavior.
