So, I bought my first arcade machine yesterday. A nice two board, fully functional, blue donkey kong machine. After playing around with it a bit, I noticed the sequence of levels for donkey kong wasn't quite right. (I would get the second screen twice and so forth). So I opened up the back and to my surprise there was a board attached by a ribbon cable where an eprom should be. (Had a copyright of 1982 - LINEAR ELEC) Luckily the mod had the original eprom on it, so with a little careful switching everything was back to normal.
My question is - How common were these mods back in the day? Looking it up on the internet, I could find almost nothing about modding an arcade machine.
(The mod had 4 dip switches that would alter the sequence of levels further and do... god knows what else)
