Picked up a DK Jr today that was supposedly "in perfect working order". Given the dust on the machine, this may have been the case years ago. First it wouldn't even power on (found the neutral wire pulled away from the plug).

Here is what the monitor looks like. Basically it looks like the gain is up too high, but there are a series of vertical lines and there seems to be a predominance of "blue" hues from what little I can make out of the game.

The game plays fine (nearly blind) with working controls and audio.

Unfortunately, the owner did not have the key to the back and so we'll need to drill out the lock to get identification on the monitor type (but I think it's a safe assumption that it's original as everything through the front coin door appeared that way.

Is this a simple "cap kit" issue, a simple monitor adjustment, or did I inherit major problems?

Cap kit and the brightness is way too high.
Try adjusting it and see what the pic looks like.
Remember there are 3 pots to adjust it.
1 on the fly back,1 on the remote board and 1 on the chassis.

Remember, Nintendo cabinets use a K6510 key. You should be able to buy a K6510 key and have no need to drill the lock.

don't worry i have already sent a pm shortly after he posted yesterday. so the locks could be saved:)

Peace

hey guys, anyone know where I can find a K6510 key. I just bought a DK with a locked back door as well - thanks.

Thanks Buffet..will I be able to make a copy of this from a local locksmith..and how much would he charge? The issue is this cabinet is stored at my parents place about an hour or so away and am not sure when i'll be out there again...so I don't want to hold you up on sending it back if I can't first make a copy.

My local locksmith duplicated one for me for less than $10 (can't remember how much it actually was). Wanted to have a spare for my cocktail in case it got lost.
