In the middle of my Donkey Kong Jr restoration and got the urge to play this mostly blind machine (still awaiting cap kit). Somehow mustering for the first couple boards, I noticed everything works perfectly except Junior makes no jump sound. All other music and sound effects are fine.

Looking on MikesArcade repair logs, this problem is explicitly listed:
bad cap C15, 22 uF @ 16V Tantalum capacitor.

So, I went to Bob Roberts' page and noticed a Nintendo Audio Board Repair kit, which in more detail is shown here: http://www.therealbobroberts.net/na1.jpg This capacitor # nor the value above are shown.

Where can I get this part? And is there anything else I should consider doing?

The reason it's not on the audio board cap kit is that the audio board is up by the monitor, not on the PCB. The caps mentioned in the repair logs are on the PCB board.

So my co-worker is an el tech who happened to have an entire stash of 22uF/16V polarized electrolytic capacitors in his parts stash. This is the first time either of us had heard the term Tantalum used. Google shows the advantages and disadvantages to using one vs. the other, but we haven't located anything stating interchangability.

Would I be OK swapping one of these in, or is it paramount that I get a tantalum ceramic one?

Anyone ever come across this issue?

Per MikesArcade repair logs, I replaced C15 w/ a standard 22uf/16V cap. Still no jump sound. It's not a tantalum, but everything I read says this shouldn't make a different for this application.

Then went to brasington and that says the jump sound is due to the 47uf/16V cap at C24. Replaced that with a 47uf/35V, still nothing.

All other sounds work just fine.

FIXED!!! My ESR meter came last night and in the first five minutes of use it paid for itself.

Funny how I replaced C24 and didn't even notice that the green cap at C22 had one of its legs broken away from the board. Meter found this in the first two minutes of going through the analog sound section!

Could not be happier. Fired up the soldering iron and just had this feeling that was the smoking gun.

Junior works perfectly!

Happy Thanksgiving all.
