Picked up a working DK Jr yesterday.

The case is clue, but the serial panel plate states it is a DK Jr case.

Curious did they make DK Jr cases blue? I thought the ones I have always seen where orange.

Also does anyone know an exact color match for the orange ones? I might just paint this and make it orange.

Orange is sexy ;) hahaha

DK Jr only came in orange but there is a very slight posiblity they put out blue ones.

Check out the back of the Japanese flyer!

I've never seen or heard of blue DK Jrs ever reaching production. If you post pictures of your cab we might be able to figure it out. Especially a picture of the plate and a picture of the sheet on the inside of the back door.

If the cabinet is in good shape I would not touch the original finish as you'll devalue it.

Uploading some pictures -

The plate on the back indicates DK JR, but I wonder if it wasnt put there as I think it just doesnt look right. Not sure why it has black screws on the plate?

Also the monitor is interesting. The others I have don't have the cover over the flyback, nor do they have this thing at the top above the sound amp. Not sure what the thing about the sound amp is, but it looks like a relay to me.

It's most likely a DK Jr. kit installed in a DK. You can see on the sheet on the back door that it was originally a TKG-UP which is DK.

I used to own a DK Jr. that I restored and painted blue. Orange is original for US. And as posted, it looks like it was released in blue in Japan. The art was slightly different as well.

Well I wondered if the doors might have just got changed...

The tag reads - DJR1-UP

Ugghh...now the debate on to paint it Orange or not. Not even sure what Orange to paint it though.

Needs new side art for sure as one side has none.

Well, kits came with tags too, so they could have just switched the plates. Either way, I don't think DK Jr. came out of the factory in blue so it's most likely conversion. I can't find the pic, but there is an old factory picture that shows hundreds of DK Jr. cabs in production and they were all orange. It doesn't really matter, you can make it whatever color you want. :)

If DK Jr. ever came out in blue, my guess is that it was VERY limited and only in Japan. More likely, they mocked up the flyer before making the final decision to go with an orange cab for the actual production. I don't know exactly when the game was shipped but the Japanese flyer is dated July 23, 1982. Nintendo implemented changes FAST back then. It's possible that they put out the flyer in July, didn't ship until August, and by that time had made the decision to change the cabinet color to oragne.

MY guess is that your cab was originally a Donkey Kong due to the TKG sheet on the back door. I don't think DK Jr. was ever released as a kit. I bet that this was something that was done after the fact, either by an OP or a collector. Who knows.

DK Jr. does look cool in blue though! I like DK in red, DK Jr. in blue, and Mario Bros in Orange.

My plywood DK has the same cover on the flyback, but it does not have the board above the sound board.

If it was me I would find an orange cab to put the kit in and turn the blue one back into DK.

When you paint the cab it really kills the originality. Most hard core collectors are looking for non-painted original cabs. Yes I know they made a lot of these cabs...but still, it is only original once....

Here's that pic and a DK jr. that I had a couple of years ago - it was also in a blue cab. Definitely a conversion from a DK. I do agree that the blue looks better than the orange, but if I ever get another jr. it will have to be orange as that is how I remember them bitd. ;)

I've seen several Sanyo's with the flyback cover, but the part above the amp I'm not sure about... looks like it's wired to a switch or a pot at the rear of the monitor.

What I find weird is the plate on the back is different than all of my other DK cabinets, and it even denotes DK JR.

Thanks for finding this pic. It's glorious.

I'm a year late to this party but i just got a DK Jr and it's EXACTLY like the one in the original post. All the same indicators (up to the black screws on the plate). I wonder if this was some sort of trial run they did at some point.

Like it was stated though the plates were part of the kit. They would be replaced with a new plate just like you would replace the marquee...

As for the small board above the sounds board, that would be part of the manual degausse... Look at the red degausse button at the bottom of the pic (At the frame)
