Donkey Kong Joystick Guard

I'll chime in here and state that I DO like them on my games. Because they were original, and I'm a stickler for originality.

If you only knew how many different DK machines I played bitd, I don't remember seeing a one on any of them, not having one is original to me, and I am a stickler for bitd originality.:p

Yeah, it's personal preference. You either like the look and feel of the original or you like it without knowing it's in a home setting where the CPO won't be abused.

So Barry, if you bought from gamestencils and they are collecting dust (no pun intended), you should sell it to the OP since he's looking for a set. :)

I sold them a while back or I'd have been happy to give them away.......

I'm torn because my cpo already has some marks from a dust cover. The one from gamestencils looks nice to me based on the picture I saw here compared to the one from Mikes. The Mikes one seems less transparent, but that could just be from the pictures.

I also haven't gotten an email reply from gamestencils yet. I did receive a nice offer for a Mikes one from rainman154, which I will take should I decide to get a dust cover and if I can't find one from gamestencils.

Seems to me most here don't like the dust covers, unless that is just the vocal minority.

If your CPO has the marks you can wet sand your CPO with fine sandpaper and then polish out and they should dissapear......

My TKG2 red cab DK didn't appear to ever have them. The CPO is the original with no copyright and there was no ring of wear from a dust shield. I know the manual says they should be there, but I can't recall ever seeing them on there when I was a kid. - Barry

I guess I'll install it and see how much it shows up once on the control panel. If it's still bothering me I'll try the wet sanding method or just get a dust cover. Still haven't heard back from gamestencils.

Dust covers rule!

Not to argue about whether or not ops actually installed them BITD or not, but of the half dozen or so DK's I've been through, all but one had them. As well as 2 cocktails and a cabaret. Which has little bearing on BITD, but does follow factory specs. I can see them being broken off and destroyed by the teens of the day, so heavy use machines surely eventually lacked them.

Now it is completely an aesthetic preference.

As for scratching, if the cpo and the bottom surface of the cover were buffed smooth and burr-free, they should only scratch if foreign material built up under them - which in a home-use environment, would be next to nil. If you cared about that sort of thing, which I personally don't.

Were the orginals clear or opaque?

I just recently picked up an original CPO (no copyright etc.) and there is some minor ring wear. I know they were using the no copyright artwork well into the TKG-3UPs though. Maybe it was something they started in the interim.

I can't believe this discussion about joystick dust washers has gone on this long. But to add to the discussion :D, my guess is that they probably came with them out of the factory and a variety of things could have happened:

- OP left them on.
- OP didn't like the look of them and took them off.
- Rings were damaged in service and OP took them off.
- OP replaced a joystick and/or CPO and just took the rings off.
- OP replaced a joystick and/or CPO and forgot to put the rings back on.
Etc.

If the debate is whether or not they came with them out of the factory, I've come across about five DK/DK Jr./Popeyes and all have had them. Both rings are usually cracked and fogged up. But does it really matter? It comes down to personal preference. Some guys like them, some guys don't. :)

My parents had a burger joint with arcade games in the early 80's. I was there when our game guy wheeled in a new Donkey Kong. It was the first one I had ever seen. It was in the blue cabinet but had the early roms that allowed you to put your hand just above the top of the girders to keep barrels from coming down. It had the clear disc on the joystick. It's your game and you can do what you want, but to me it belongs on the game.

Argument closed! :) Thanks for sharing that memory.

I'm not a huge stickler for having the game look exactly like it did back in the day (I mean I'm playing Donkey Kong in a DK Junior cab, no side art yet, and no back door yet).

It is interesting to hear people's preferences on this though.

I think my DK cabaret has a protective disk under the control panel, surrounding the joystick. I'll have to check again...
