Donkey Kong Joystick Guard

What do you all think about "joystick guards". Specifically, for Donkey Kong. I'm talking the plastic circle that goes above the cpo.

I personally think they look junky, but do they serve a purpose? Do you all have joystick guards on top of your DK cpos?

They always seem to scratch the CPO so I don't use them anymore. I haven't had a problem yet with junk getting to the joystick, plus it just looks better without them ;)

The ones from Gamestencils.com are what you should go with:

Yes, over time, it will scratch your CPO, but it's how it was originally and it will help to keep dust and particles out. Also, finger nails, rings, etc. will end up scratching around the joystick anyways so it protects it in that sense. I honestly like the way it looks.

That one from gamestencils looks pretty cool. The NOS cpo I just got has a few scratches on it and that might conceal the scratches but still look nice.

Crap. Gamestencils.com says they are out of stock.

Oh my bad, I didn't even think to check to see if they were in stock. I figured they'd have a large supply since I think they cut the rings themselves. I would maybe email and see if they plan on making anymore. If not, I'm not sure who else makes them. The one from Mike's would probably work fine, but it doesn't come with the black ring that goes underneath the CPO.

eseyo1 - no problem. I didn't know that site existed until you told me. I sent them an email. We'll see.

I do want the black ring that goes underneath also. My daughter keeps pointing at the one currently in my machine and saying "broke". We can't have that!

I think another purpose for them was to make it easier for your hand to 'slide' with the joystick movement. I remember BITD my skin would sometimes 'grab' the plexi surface, especially if it had some soda spilled on it, and was sticky, or something.

I could make some 0.030" thick ones, (about 1/32") if you want to share the inner and outer dimensions with me...

I purchased one from Mikes. I won't use it because I am scared it will scratch the CP. If you want it, I will send it to you for $5 shipped.

I chose not to put one on when I restored my DK Jr. I don't like the way it looks, how it scratches the CP, and I imagine it would feel annoying under your hand when using the joystick. Nobody is eating potato chips over the control panel as would happen in an arcade, so I'm not worried about crumbs and stuff getting in there.

but what about Fritos?

I could maybe see using one in a true "arcade" environment, helps the Op keep the stick clean and serviceable.
I don't use one on mine, I think it looks better and I don't have the kind of traffic on my games to warrant it imo.

1. They look crappy
2. They scratch the CPO
3. There is another dust/dirt shield under the CPO.
4. In a home environment they should be fine without them.

I had purchased some to use, but decided against it and I'm glad I did. - Barry

Yeah, it's personal preference. You either like the look and feel of the original or you like it without knowing it's in a home setting where the CPO won't be abused.

So Barry, if you bought from gamestencils and they are collecting dust (no pun intended), you should sell it to the OP since he's looking for a set. :)

I'm torn because my cpo already has some marks from a dust cover. The one from gamestencils looks nice to me based on the picture I saw here compared to the one from Mikes. The Mikes one seems less transparent, but that could just be from the pictures.

I also haven't gotten an email reply from gamestencils yet. I did receive a nice offer for a Mikes one from rainman154, which I will take should I decide to get a dust cover and if I can't find one from gamestencils.

Seems to me most here don't like the dust covers, unless that is just the vocal minority.
