Donkey Kong joins the lineup...

Focus on gameplay over cosmetics. Get a joystick you are happy with.

Then practice. A lot.

Im surprised you didnt write "where is the Robotron cabinet?" :D

I haven't played since WD40'ing the stick, but it feels way better. I'm stoked to get some play time in tonight (even with my scoring issue).

I know your multi Williams is in So Cal, so don't get too excited. When you make the move, I expect mucho improvemente in your Robo scores.

Nintendo has never made a better game than the original DK. Since you are mostly in practice mode, I would switch the settings to give you the maximum number of lives to start the game, which I believe is 7.

What should I consider a good score? 1M?

I was close to 500K when I had a Robo cab a few years back. That game is freaking hard, man.

Get OTT to do it. He made me a repro instruction card for my cocktail, and it is of the highest quality. Just look:

Why is the © 1981 Nintendo of America Inc. Replaced with Nintendo?

Thats one of many differences. Apparently this is the Mikes Arcade file, so Im just gonna get one printed. Nobody else will know the difference.

I've never seen this on the cocktail machines, but the early DK instruction sheets for the uprights just said "Nintendo". The early DKs were put out before Nintendo sorted out how to protect their intellectual property. The art on the early DKs (i.e. CPOs, bezel, marquee, instruction sheets) just said "Nintendo" or had no writing at all. The later DKs said "(c) 1981 Nintendo of America, Inc." on the artwork.

I'm assuming that is an attempted repro of an early instruction sheet.

A few people can play Robotron indefinitely on TG settings. They have mastered the game. I am not one of them. Eugene Jarvis claims that to properly play this game, you have to play it on the difficulty setting of 10 (the hardest), otherwise it's too easy. Too easy?.....

On TG settings, I think a good score is a million, but many will argue that the real test is being able to roll the game. My high score is only 1.5 million and I've only achieved it a few times, after playing this game literally thousands of times in the arcade, on home computer, and my own machine over the past 29 years. I can only conclude that for me it was simply luck to score that high. My average is around a million.

I don't have a clue how someone managed to play this game for a few days straight to set the record. I've watched videos of people playing this game at a higher level than me and I can only conclude that their hand eye coordination is superior to my own and their ability to make a split second decision just a fraction faster than me, makes the difference.

DK is a much different game than Robotron. There is more strategy to DK, and patience is very important to success because the game has a limited number of screens and potential for scoring, and you only get four guys per game. For people who can play Robotron indefinitely, endurance is the most important thing. In a 1.5 million point game you use up around 63 guys, opposed to just four in Donkey Kong.

EJ is correct. Robotron should only be played on difficulty 10, good scores at that setting are 500-750K, great are 800K+. Less than 300K, keep practicing. :)

Enjoy playing it. As sure that you will! Congrats!

Sam is a fan :)

Dude isn't even 3 yet, and he passed the first barrel board last night.

I'm screwed.

Kids today are born with video game and computer skills. I think our DNA picks it up...

Same thing with skateboarding skills. They kickflip ollie right out of the womb, now.

Ahahahahah, touche. Should I bring Sammy to CAX to give Phet some Donkey Kong tips?
He should be able to school him on pretty much everything but Pole Position. I don't know what happened, but it appears Phet actually knows how to play that one...
