Donkey Kong Jamma conversion without destroying it's integrity
Just wanted to give something back to the community.
This is a recount of how I converted my Donkey Kong cabinet to JAMMA while maintaining it's original integrity.
Actions Taken:
WIRING:
- Created a JAMMA harness and divided the wires in corresponding bundles.
- Disconnected all original wiring, tied it neatly in a bundle and stored it.
POWER SUPPLY:
- Disconnected the original PS and stored it.
- Purchased a HAPP Power Pro 15 Amp PS and connected it to the ISO transformer.
- Used wire taps to piggy back the AC power while maintaining the integrity of the original PS connector.
CONTROL PANEL:
- used the CP factory wire connectors on the Control Panel side.
- Purchased a 4-pin and a 10-pin connector on the jamma harness and carefully matched the CP pinout. This way I preserved the CP wiring integrity.
- I have two different Control Panels (Both original DKs) and installed an 8 way restrictor plate on one. This way I can change them depending on the game. I will also created a custom CP to which will house a single trackball and buttons.
MONITOR (SANYO 20EZ):
This was the trickiest part!
- Since the original DK monitor did not bring a video inverter board, I purchased one and obtained the power directly from the power supply.
- After connecting a Dig Dug board (with JAMMA adapter) I realized that the screen was inverted. After some searching I found a way of fixing this by flipping the yoke wires. I cut the wires and installed insulated QCs to allow easy switching whenever needed.
REMAINING:
- Plugged the Speaker wires with a spare connector
- Attached the Coin and maintenance switches
- Performed cable management by using the cable ties already installed in the cabinet.
Now I can plug JAMMA boards to the cabinet and play to my heart's content (As long as the Control Panels match the game requirements of course).
Now I can always re connect the original harness and PS to bring the Cabinet back to it's original vintage state.
I hope this post can help others who may want to convert their Nintendo Cab to JAMMA and still preserve the original game integrity.
