Here's a video of a mostly working 2-board Donkey Kong board set.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRLGAzIuYTU

This Donkey Kong board mostly works. The only problem that I see/hear is that the Donkey Kong roar doesn't sound right. The "How High Can You Get?" tune doesn't play after the broken growl, but does play otherwise (after dying, etc). I verified that the 3F and 3H roms (this is a two board set) match the known good set from dkong.zip in Mame. What else could be the problem?

Thanks!
Gary

(Corrected the rom names above. . I originally wrote 3G and 3H. . is actually 3F and 3H.)

CPU BOARD - position 3F
Pull chip, clean legs, reseat. If still doesn't work then reflow solder on that socket.

OK, had already reseated that chip (had a mistake in my original post that I just corrected.) Thanks. I'll have a look at reflowing.

Also, this DJ Jr work log entry (http://www.brasington.org/arcade/tech/dkj/) sounds similar to what is in the video:

"Crash sound incorrect, distorted and double (ie. 2 back to back crash sounds). After replacing C25, C29, Q2, and 8N, I noticed that diode D1 was factory installed backwards. This is the 2nd time I've seen a diode be installed backwards at the factory. Reverse D1, problem solved."

Update: I installed a Braze high score kit today. Does anyone know which ROMs on the CPU board it overrides? The problem still happens with the high score kit, so if I know which ROMs arena longer being used, that'll rile those out.

I'll pull 3F in a bit to see what happens. I'm assuming that if it isn't being used with the high score kit, I'll hear no change.

Pulling 3G does have an effect, so I'm assuming that the Braze kit doesn't override it. I'll try reflowing soon.

Anyone know where the audio decompression happens in Donkey Kong? Dedicated hardware or does it happen in the CPU. I think the growl is the only sample based audio in there. I need to stare at the schematic more.

The only NON-SAMPLE based sounds are walk, jump, and stomp (those are analog). Everything else is digital (sample based).
