I'm not sure what the hell is going on, but my dedicated Donkey Kong is way harder than any MAME version or 60-in-1 version I've ever played. I can score maybe 400,000 on MAME and/or 60-in-1 but I'm lucky to get 100,000 on my dedicated Kong. What gives? The fireballs are extremely agressive from the get-go, wild barrels are falling everywhere, the first pie-factory level starts off with 4 fireballs instead of 3. Am I losing it, or is there a hard version of DK? (even though threre is no dipswitch setting for level of difficulty)

I've heard about a harder DK where the fireballs start out at maximum speed, and the pie factory levels have more fireballs jump out at the start. My understanding is that arcade owners wanted the games to end more quickly to turn over the line faster, and earn more money per hour. I believe it is a rom set, meaning the only way to correct it is to get new original ones, or have someone with a rom burner write the original code to them.

Well that's great for the arcade owners, but I hate playing my Donkey Kong! On the bright side, when I go back to playing MAME after a while, it seems like a cake walk.

If I were to get these original ROMS, how hard are they to swap out? Are they soldered to the board, or are they somewhat easy to replace?

They are socketed, meaning they can be removed easily with a flathead screwdriver. Note the orientation of the chip in the board, remove it with the screwdriver carefully, and press the new chip into the socket.
