I've got a DK cocktail that the previous owner replaced the top with some crappy looking fake wood texture. I'm restoring this back to the original. Having trouble finding out what that top "cream" colored material is. I've been told it's paint, but is sure looks like it's on some sort of laminate.

Anybody else restored the top/sides of a DK cocktail that can offer me some advice?

See photos below. The one with the wood grain is mine, the other is how it's supposed to look.

Thanks, everyone!

I have one of these cocktails in it's original form

You wanted to know what is under the glass? Whether it was laminate or not?

It is laminate, and my guess is someone did indeed slap the woodgrain over the white stuff. Looks like he did it to the edges too. That is supposed to be a much richer, less gay looking wood grain edge banding.

That's a lot of woodgrain. Yikes. Lol.
Glad to see you're gonna put it back if you can.
Do you have the chrome corner glass clips?
I've got a set for sale, and a pair of locks.

I vote to heat up an edge and see if you can peel it off as others have noted. If that is too hard just get one of those wide safety blades from Home Depot and slowly separate the vinyl from the top. I had to do that on my restore. I ended up using the safety blade to get vinyl off and then I went back with a sander and high grit paper to smooth it all out. The off-white top is thick enough so you don't have to worry about accidentally removing all of it when using high grit paper.

In the end, I used Seeker's art in the link above. Here was my mod:
