I just picked up a donkey kong cocktail (my first) and I plugged it in and everything worked except the monitor had a vertical problem. The cent hold pot was broken so I thought I would fix if first and then see how things looked. Chances are I would need a cap kits (from everything I have read). After fixing the cent hold pot the problem began.

The sound made a loud sqeaking, the video tube had a blue spark in the tube instead of the warm orange glow and the screen was black.

First, is this fixable by a lay person.
Second, if not, should I purchase another monitor?

I am in Northern California and upright video games are rare and coctails are never seen:(

Are you sure it was inside the tube, and not around the flyback? Seems odd that a tube would fail suddenly, when it was working. Examine the flyback for cracks.

Likewise, examine the neck of the picture tube. Is it cracked? It could very well be that the tube was gassy... but still, it's odd for a tube to fail like that, from being working.

Even if the tube did fail, it's not that big of a deal - you can replace the tube with one from a junked TV set. See if someone nearby has a tube tester that can check your tube for you.
