I've come to the realization that the vs. Excitebike cab i bought from BlackCJ was a DK cabinet originally. It's in great shape on the inside, but I'd like to refinish it, sand it down, paint it orange..yet I feel like I'm committing a sin if I turn into the bright orange or gray Vs. cabinet I truly wanted.

The thing is, I don't like DK in the least so converting it back to a DK for my own use is kind of out of the question... It ranks near the bottom of my list, behind Pac Man (yeah..lol), and Popeye.

What would you guys do? Refinish it in blue, or repaint it orange, or trade it for another Vs. Cabinet?

Does the fact it still has the original DK serial number and instruction sheet in the back panel add any value?

Thanks much,

Dan

Certainly depends on the serial number? And even at that point it doesn't add lots of value. Perhaps the only way it adds value is if you can find someone that is interested in a cabinet with that serial number. Care to share the number?

Go for it. A lot of Vs., Popeyes, Playchoices, etc out there used to be Donkey Kongs... and yours has already been converted.

Not as much as turning it back in to a DK. ;) If it's nice like you say, maybe you can find someone with an equally as nice vs. who really wants a DK?

True! And someone would appreciate it more too..being authentic...but t=yeah, it was little dusty and needs a cap kit and coin microswitch, but it's all original inside...wooden coin box and everything.

Someone in your area might want to swap you, could save you some work too. I am all for saving some work :)

yeah, i am not looking forward to sanding and painting this thing..lol

Sure! The cabinet and back panel are stamped, along with the serial number plate: 158177

It would make a nice summer project, but I've watch too many Antique Roadshows evidently (if this wasn't painted, it'd be worth...OMFG)

Eh. Do whatever you want with it. They made a million of those things. As you can see, yours was number one hundred fifty eight thousand one hundred and seventy seven. Think about that. DAMN that's a lot of Donkey Kong's and I doubt they shut the factory down after they made that one.

If you only had those last one hundred seventy seven of them, would you turn ONE of them into your Excitebike? Sure you would. Just because they're not all there in front of you, doesn't mean you shouldn't. Plus, Vs. Excitebike was a kit specifically designed to turn that Donkey Kong by Nintendo into an Excitebike by Nintendo. No foul.

lmao!

I didn't realize the serial numbers started with 1, nor that they made so freakin many!

Hey, I may have the last DK cab ever made! haha

Most Vs. cabs I have seen are blue, I have only seen a few orange ones. I'm not saying they don't exist just not as common as blue. I have two and one used to be a DK and the other Popeye. My buddy has a US DK jr cab that was converted to a Vs and in my opinion blue looks better, but that is just me. Oh, and the dedicated gray Vs. cabs were a different design than the standard Nintendo "DK" style cab.

Yup, I'd hold out for a gray one. I absolutely wouldn't paint the blue dk grey, it'd never look right because the cab was completely different. You can paint it orange if you like, I guess.

Maybe a reason most of the kitted vs. games were blue was because Donkey Kong was older than Jr. when the Vs. kit was released, so the ops chose to convert the older game? Come to think of it, I've seen a ton more blue ones too than the orange ones.
