Recently finished my DK JR project using Behr paint from Home Depot.
Really happy with the color and quality of the paint.
I've just acquired (well bought, yet to pick up) a new Nintendo cabinet.
I'd like to paint it DK blue preferably with Behr paint.
Does anyone by chance have a good for DK blue code for Behr paint ?

Thanks in advance all.

(I've googled it and searched the forum with no luck)

I pprefer Sherwin Williams Proclassic or All Surface oil based paints.
I took a panel that holds the cp latch to color match and they got it right on the money.

I haven't pick up my new cab yet.
I'll get it in August, but I do know it's painted black.
From what I gather it's hard to get oil based paints locally now.
Hence the reason I was looking for Behr latex paint.

Those SW paints also come in water based.
Do they sell oil based in quarts? A quart is all you should need if you spray.
If I need more then I get a quart mixed up then go back later and get another and then mix them together in a gallon can, then thin and spray.

Ignore prior post, I recall seeing a Sherwin Williams in my area.
Just looked online and I have one not even five minutes away.
I'll call them to see if they have oil based quarts.
Would the color code change depending on the paint ? IE latex vs. oil ?
And lastly can someone post the code for Sherwin Williams.
(or for that mater exactly what I would need, size, type, etc)
I can go pick this up shortly.

Thanks

Canadian Tire sells their "Premier" line of paint in oil-based as well as latex. I used it on my Donkey Kong Jr. I'm not saying you should use that over the Sherwin Williams, since the SW is higher quality, but just that oil-based is still easily available.

Perhaps dumb question, but what is the advantage of oil ?
Seems to the preference from what I can gauge.
I'm open to any DK blue so long as I can get it in Canada.
So if anyone can post anything let me know.

Thanks all

Consider the original finish was likely neither latex or oil based, but lacquer.

Oil-based (in my opinion) looks closer to the original finish. Most of all, to me, it sprays MUCH better than latex. You can spray water based finishes, provided you have a good spray gun with the proper (larger) tip. You can spray oil-based finishes, thinned with acetone or whatever, out of a cheaper HVLP gun and get a slick finish. Latex also tends to have a sticky-ness about it, even after curing. Oil-based finishes take longer to dry, but when they do, they dry hard.

I can say I've done both. I did the base coat on a pinball cabinet in water based (latex). Latex has come a long way, and it looks great, but it just doesn't spray as well as oil-based. Also, it does have that sticky-ness about it. I did the entire base coat and stencil job on a Stargate cabinet, using all oil-based (RustOleum) finishes and it came out awesome.

From what I have heard oil based is easier to get a nice smooth finish.
I was not happy with the results rolling water based paint.
I ended up spraying it.
Irrc Phet rolled oil based with great resuts.l

I've used Behr paint and a small foam roller on all three Nintendo cab restores I've done. I've had great results. Just sand, prime, sand and paint.

Home Depot changes paint names periodically I believe, but you can get help color matching in store. My wife is a designer, so she helped me.

Just took a look on the Behr site, they do have LIQUID BLUE
listed. I'm going to go take a look today. Did you use oil or latex ?

Good call. I didn't even bother to look. :)

I believe Home Depot stopped selling oil-based paint years ago. At least in CA. But again, I had no difficulties or issues with latex paint. Maybe because I hand rolled it, but as long as you carefully do multiple light coats, it can turn out nice. I don't have any noticeable streaks or any imperfections really. If you want, I can take some closer shots for more detail.

Be sure to use a non-faded piece from your DK cabinet for reference, because Home Depot cannot change the formula once it is done. (I still have a can of Behr paint that is almost DK blue). :D

Man those games are beautiful! Strange seeing a blue DK Jr though.

Yeah, I had a long thread about it. I think the consensus was orange but I went with blue. Doesn't matter as I sold it a while ago.

If you look at the colors in the side art, the bezel, marquee and CPO, blue would actually be a better match for DKjr and orange would be a better match for Donkey Kong.

To me, the cabinets look weird in the colors that Nintendo chose for them. I think the only one that fits correctly is the original Radarscope Red that were converted to DK.

Just my .02. I know it doesn't matter now, but seeing this blue DKjr makes me think that's the way it should have come from the factory.

BTW - where did you get the Nintendo logo neon sign? That looks great.
