My DK has sound issues - some sounds are there - some are missing... sometimes sound locks up completely...
I have a 4 board set - is it possible to just replace the sound board since the game plays just fine other than the sound?
Does anyone have one for sale?

I have a 4 board set myself. I only got the game recently, but my sound board had been recapped completely in 1999, as evidenced by a repair sticker. It was the only thing on the entire machine that had newer caps, everything else is stock. Maybe sometimes the audio boards need to be recapped too.

If you haven't done so, that's exactly what I'd do. My machine sounds great, BTW.

It's a fairly small board, and you can remove it completely from everything else fairly easily. It's probably the easiest board you could recap, if it makes you feel any better. Although it does contain quite a few caps. I taught myself to solder this summer when I got my donkey kong. I'm 30 and had never picked up an iron before in my life.

You can order the caps you need there.

Here's a more direct link, where you select the values you need.

http://www.mouser.com/Passive-Compo...num-Electrolytic-Capacitors-Leaded/_/N-75hqw/

There are quite a few search parameters.

The ones you need to worry about are.

Capacitance... the "uf' value of the cap
Voltage... the "v" rating of the cap
Termination style... most of the caps would be radial because both leads are on the bottom... axial means there's a lead on each end of the cap

Don't worry about the rest of the parameters at this point. Click "apply filter" and it'll take you to a page with a bunch of results. You then look for what's in stock and what's cheapest... although at this point I would look for a higher temperature version of the cap, for example one that goes to 105 vs 85 because the cap will have a higher tolerance to heat- just to be safe.

Any of this make sense... i can try to clarify it if you need.

Caps

Recapping a board just takes 2 things: time and patience. Once you get the hang of it you'll be fine. I often buy caps at the local thrifty wholesale place in town. Here it's called Axman. It stocks everything from gasmasks, electronics and novelty items. I can find caps for 15 cents each instead of $1-2 each at Radio Shack.

Sometimes you can get the caps cheap on Ebay as well. Search for the capacitor type... I have purchased a bag of 50 caps for $3 + $3 shipping from Hong Kong and they arrived in a week.

Hope this helps.
