So I posted a while back about getting this screen with my DK 4 BS:

bad3p-1.gif

I looked up the screenshots on Braze's site and found that that screen is usually caused by a bad 2716 at position 3P on the 2 board stack, which translates to 5K on the 4 board. Had Steph burn me a new one, now I get the following screen:

bad5a-1.gif

Braze's site notes this is a bad 2532 at 5A on the 2 board stack which translates to, you guessed it, 5K on the 4 board stack. What's up do you think? Wrong rev rom?

OK, so it looks like there are 2 5K's, one on the video board and one on the CPU. Looks like I may have replaced the wrong 5K? Jeez what a bunch of shit. I'll try again tonight.

I can provide schematics if you need them.

Well, I think if I just take the stack apart, replace the original 2716 at 5k on the CPU, then put the new 2716 at 5K on the video board, I should be fine. We'll see I guess. *all appendages over 3 inches crossed*

Your initial problem was due to a problem with the eprom located at 5K on the video board in your 4 board stack. I'd bet that when you inserted the eprom into your 4 board stack, you inserted it into the 5K location on your CPU board. That's a fairly easy mistake to make, since that 4 board stack has 2 different 5K locations - one on the video board (2716 eprom for fixed characters) and one on the CPU board (a 2732 eprom) which contains code for the Z80.

To swap Steph's chip into your board, you'll need to lift your clock board and replace the chip at 5K on the video board, located under the clock board.

Capiche?

Uhhhh, have you actually read the thread? I realized my mistake in post 2 (of 7).

Yeah, I read it, but wanted to re-iterate it.

You have another concern; not sure if plugging a 2716 into a socket meant for a 2532 (2732) matters much as far as damaging the chip, but be aware of that. You could have corrupted the newly programmed chip.

Did you test the offending socket for continuity? Tighe's right, those sockets are notoriously crappy. I've replaced those low ones on the video board before b/c they're right near the board edge and susceptible to corrosion and cold solder joints.

Hellz no. If the chip doesn't fix it, off to the repairman it goes. I don't mess with board repair anymore.

Just get it to me if the chip doesn't work right after trying it. I've repaired nearly a dozen if these 4 board stacks over the past year. I seem to have a knack for them.

You read my mind. I just hope this board has the ladder cheat. it was the original board in my converted Space Demon cab, so its gotta be an early rev. Oh please please please have the ladder cheat. That was one of the reasons I held onto my DK cocktail this long. If the board I have now didn't have the cheat, I was gonna swap it for my cocktail board set.

No biggie if the current romset isn't the ladder cheat - I can re-program it with the ladder cheat roms.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if you install the D2K kit in a DK you don't need any of the ROMs for it to work.

If he installed the D2K kit, he loses the ability to run the ladder cheat, since the kit takes the place of the roms, and the D2K code doesn't include the version of DK with the ladder cheat. Plus, I'm fairly certain that if he has an older 4 board stack, his Z80 isn't socketed anyway, so that makes installing the D2K kit more difficult too.

What are the numbers on the PCB, if its TKG3-07, chances are no ladder cheat. If its TKG3-06 or earlier (TKG2) then the chances are greater it's got the cheat (although many of these had the cheat removed with new eproms).

Ahh, both my 4 board sets have socketed z80s in them. I installed the D2K kit on it. I don't need to cheat. :D

The early 4 board stacks for DK were actually converted 4 board Radarscopes. So yes, the TRS2 stuff should work great.

TRS2 --> TKG2 for CLK, CPU, Video and SND boards. The ESS board was not carried forward to the DK board stack.

There were revisions on the TKG3 boards, but not many. Most things are placed the same.
