I'm trying to gauge what it would take to convert a DK 3 machine into a DK machine. They're pretty similar, right? It would just take a new PCB, CPO, Bezel, Marquee, and side art, right?

Am I missing something?

Funny you should ask... I have a DK machine that I want to convert INTO a DK3.

The DK3 harness uses the edge connector while the DK harnesses I've seen are individual, multiple connectors. The CP connector is different, too.

LMK if you want to possibly swap parts.

Trading cabs would definitely be the sensible solution! Swapping parts is a great idea. I'll let you know. Getting the cab now.

You can use the edge connector with a DK board.

It wouldn't be hard to convert the DK3 to DK. Just swap the art/CP and the PCB.

Nice pick-up.

I've removed DK/DK Jr. art two different ways (chemical + scrape, heat) and heating up the art, pulling up a corner, and a slow and steady pull worked best in my case. Also, you're not scraping up the cabinet that way, either.

With that said, I'd hate to see you destroy the DK3 art. I'm not sure Rich @ ToG ever got his hands on a set to repro, but it would be nice if he did; I'd buy a set.

I shot you a PM re: the DK3 PCB, harness, CP, and artwork to put together that trade.

They didn't do a good job putting it on in the first place, plus it's beat up. I don't feel bad taking this off!

DK3 is a great game if you play it like Galaga instead of just giving it to Donkey Kong up the butt.

You know what they say about old habits, though...

You're quick... Here's what's in my DK for comparison...

I just happened to catch the screenshot during the death animation; the sprites are fine and glitch-free.

We can take this back to PM if it is off-topic (or if it should to be moved to the tech forum), but I thought it might help someone else (including me) clear up what's needed to convert their own cab.

DD0ck and I talked about what he has in his cab. It sounds like his DK harness is intact and the DK3 "short" harness just plugs into it, adapting to the smaller black connectors as shown in his photos.

Here's a link to the manual:
http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Nintendo/Donkey_Kong_3.pdf

Page 19 of the PDF shows the connections.

My question: how does the DK3 CP harness connect back to the PCB since it ends in a white molex and the original DK CP ends in the two small black connectors? Adapter harness?

EDIT: Never mind my question - it looks like the manual shows that the DK3 CP connects to the main DK3 harness.

Just a quick conclusion to this thread...

dd0ck and I did swap parts: he ended up with a working DK again and I have all of the pieces to build up a DK3 cab.

Well, not quite ALL of the pieces... now it's time to find some DK3 side-art with the correct colors.
