Does Zaxxon Really Suck?

Zaxxon doesn't suck, it's just people suck at playing it, let's be honest you drop a quarter in and the game ended in 40 seconds, now super zaxxon really does suck

We caught an episode of Starcade where it was former winners playing against each other as families. On the final round the first family had the son pick Super Zaxxon as their final game and they were behind on points. I thought "that's a bold move Cotton"; but, the kid from family A did pick up a decent haul of points.

It's family B's turn and since they had their son go first on the previous game, the mom had to play Super Zaxxon. Then the full scope of the genius of the kid in family A picking Zaxxon become clear. Mom from family B had no understanding of how to gauge the aim and height. She didn't hit much and crashed into everything and lost the match for family B.

See - there is a time and place for everything, Zaxxon included.

Fwiw - I always enjoyed playing it in the 80's due to the isometric challenge combined with the flight stick. Not my favorite; but, it always got a few plays. The cabinet is ugly though and stuck out when sitting next to Atari or Williams cabs.

P.S. - I have 3 flat panel displays in my game room. One is just serves as a TV. Another plays a couple of terabytes of 80's music videos. The 3rd is a TV that either displays slideshows of my photography; but, recently I added a flash drive with all the Starcade episodes. It's a nice addition to the room.

That's awesome! I love how insanely difficult Super Zaxxon is. With practice, and if you're graced with pretty good reflexes, you can learn to play it. Good game if it's free but kind of mean if you had to pay for each game to get good at it.

And true, the cabinet is kind of clunky and but it's got a cool retro quality to it, especially in wood grain. The flight stick is really important to get a feel for the game.

I never thought about it, but you are both right - the Zaxxon cabs are clunky. They lack the sweeping lines and art from Atari games, or the curves and bright stencils of the Williams games.

I still don't hate it though. It's different. Different is good.

We've all heard the lament of Zaxxon and Super Zaxxon... I was looking on Klov and listed under "legacy" was another game called Future Spy... same flight stick control... same isometric perspective... looks like a re-release of Zaxxon with a new dose of suck added to it... flying blind in a dark cloud only by radar view!?!?!

Bet that one would get the same love!

It's a tough game. I think one of the main reasons it's tough for me is due to the fact that it scrolls too fast.
For this type of game, I think it would have been better at half the speed.

I'll admit there are some cool elements, such as being able to whittle down some of the enemy jets to reduce the amount you need to dogfight at the end of the stage. That's a cool touch.

This is to achieve your Instrument Rating. Zaxxon and legacy games are for qualifying to be a Last Starfighter. Surprised how many people don't realize this.

I like Zaxxon. Back in High School, when it was new and hot, a buddy of mine and I walked across town because I had heard of a Zaxxon machine in the back room of a gas station. i'm not good at it at all, twice through the floating 'fortresses' on average, but the memories of that stupid night. The next year it seemed to be everywhere, even in the arcade tent at the annual Cattle Congress.

Heck, I was excited when I saw an AD that there was a company that was going to do versions for many of the home computers at that time.......... but alas, the promised TI 99/4(A) version never materialized..........................

The project ran into a brick wall.

Look... you can explain Zaxxon's popularity by pointing to such things as...

The Cleveland Browns...

...or Scientology.

It's not for everyone... but no matter how bad it is... if you doll it up... it will sell...
Or Budweiser, who had that cooler that would open and provide free beer if the Cleveland Browns won.

Sucks. Can't get my brain to sort out how the stick is straight and the view is diagonal. On console versions like Colecovision I wound up turning the controller 45 degrees to match the screen and did better.

Didn't play in the arcade when it was new because I didn't get enough fun for my quarter. Don't play at home for free because the amount of work required to learn where to be and when to make it through levels just isn't entertaining for me.
