When I bought my Lord of the Rings the flippers felt fine, so when I shopped it I left them alone. I don't like doing flipper rebuilds until it's necessary. Anyway, I started getting some flipper flutter in my right flipper, so a couple of nights ago I lifted the playfield to take a look. The actuators on BOTH of my flippers is missing and the leaf switch for my EOS only has one blade on either side. It looks like someone has basically removed the EOS functionality of the flippers, but they've always worked correctly.

So what gives? First of all, why would someone do this, and second of all, why haven't I had issues before now? The manual clearly shows parts on the flipper mechs that both of my flippers are missing.

On Fliptronics II setups like that, the EOS isnt necessary, as the board will manage the voltage properly. Though it is odd to just remove them.

Did you buy the game from someone that had it in their home (HUO) or was it on route at some time? I always rebuild the flippers on just about every game I get just because you never know how many plays the game has had.

It's an off-route game. After seeing this Mickey Mouse job I'm going to just rebuild the flippers. I've found a few other head scratchers as well, but this one just made zero sense.

I agree. Flipper flutter can also often be caused by dirty optos in the flipper control board. This is the piece that the buttons connect too. I have fixed a ton of flipper issues just by simply using a q-tip and cleaning these off really good.

If it is a dual coil the low voltage coil could be bad which can cause flutter or failure in the hold position

Hello Jar155,

Good to hear that you finally got a LOTR. Pinball Life sells upgraded coils for LOTR, you might want to install them at the same time you rebuild the flippers.
