does it irritate anyone how people group arcade games with video games?

what i mean is, my wife was talking to a friend on the way home from tron legacy, and mentioned that we had just seen it, and that i had a 'tron videogame.' i then imagined the friend on the other end thinking 'oh, he probably plays it on the wii or something.'

maybe it's just my irritable mood tonight taking over, but i realized that bugs me.

It only annoys me when some entries on the arcade museum database lists video games as arcade games and vice versa.

What bugs me is people thinking these games are only for Kids and they a Waste of space.

*Every game played in the 80's was played by a Kid* Mario games are only for Kids?

Wow you play that game is allmost 30 years old.

It bugs me because people think that I have 50-60 game cartridges or disc laying around instead of full-sized games. I always make sure to describe them as full-sized just to make it not sound like I live in my mom's basement with a bunch of old consoles.

Instead of sounding like you live in your mom's basement with a bunch of arcade machines and no furniture...

;)

Just call them "arcade machines". There are no console "arcade machines" so that clears up a lot of the confusion.

Yep, been through it.

Wife to other friends/dumb bitch stay at home moms: "My husband collects arcade games."

Friend: "Arcade games, oh".

Then they come over to the house.

Friend: "OOOOH! ARCADE GAMES! THAT'S REALLY COOL! Do you have Pacman? I love playing Pacman on my kids Xbox! This is so cool." BLAH BLAH BLAH

Me: "Can you guys please get the fuck out of my garage?"

Another thing i hate is people think i'm rich becouse i have these in my house.

Or i should open up a place and make big money on them.

When I get the weird look, I always say "the kind you put quarters into". That usually clears up the confusion. That, or just telling people I have an arcade in my basement.

To me "arcade machine" is nebulous. An arcade machine is any machine found in an arcade.
Video arcade game is more specific. Just don't call them "console arcade" anything. That is really annoying. I see many CL posts where they use the "console" term. That irritates. :)

As long as we know what we are talking about, who really cares about the unknowing masses?

When I'm talking to somebody who doesn't know, the way to describe it is

"Yeah, Arcade Games. I've got a Pac-Man!"

Then they go "OH SHIT, a PAC MAN????"

And know exactly what you're talking about.

While "video arcade game" is more specific and more accurate, random friend/acquaintance/whoever is more likely to just get confused at that one. "Arcade machine" usually gets the job done for me, the specificity comes in when they ask what ones I have.

I'm so stealing this one as a last ditch attempt to cure those committed to wearing the "huh?" face.

When people find out I work on arcade games for a living, they usually say, "Really? I have an Xbox that's acting up. Can you fix it?"

Most of the time I don't mention that I have any arcade games or pinball machines with new people. I assume they'll think it's weird. I don't like people to judge me based on things like that. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ashamed of it. Not at all. I just do it (collecting) for my own benefit as something I enjoy. It's better for people do discover stuff like that on their own anyway.

So to answer the question, no it doesn't irritate me because I just don't really care if people know I've got any of this stuff. It's just stuff.
