Does Gun Fight have free play?

Ufortunately I'm having a hell of a time with some roms and a GF board...no matter what I seem to do its not working, and I'm starting to suspect its not the roms but something else.

Bummer. Well, when you get it sorted out, please post a follow-up. I'm curious to hear verifiction of function on hardware, so I can consider it "done."

Mame rom set is basically for 2708's, but pretty much all the GF boardsets I've worked on so far have been 3604's or 7641's, which since there's 8 I'm assuming are along the lines of 3604's.

The mame set doesn't match what the 3609 set has either - 3 bytes are different, but I haven't had the time or motivation to figure out why they're different (yet).

Ironically I'm working on Gunfight rom issues tonight, so if I have an extra 2716 I'll fry one up and let you know if/how it works :)

did you verify the 2716s that DarrenF fixed? i see his looks like they are on pcb ROM locations E and G, but the thread linked has the SI ROM 2716s at H and G. If this 2716 upgrade only takes 2 2716s i would think that it would be in the same location as stated for the SI pcb. am i wrong or is the "7609e" for location G?

sorry just got jumpers in correct position i believe for the 2716s and ready to burn chips!

If the strapping for 2716 works correctly, it should only need two, one at H and one at G, but I'm having a problem getting the enable lines to work correctly, most likely due to figuring out exactly what S6 should be set at. Problem I'm seeing is when I make it simliar to other boards (S6), it enables BOTH roms when the second one should be selected.

Going to work on it again when I get home tonight and figure it out.

WAIT! The problem is that the image he posted is for a smaller rom - you have to merge those roms together then split them up in half for 2716's. I have the 2716 versions at home I was hoping to verify they worked before posting up.

Why merge AND split? I'd think you just merge "h" with "g", and "f" with "e" (in that order). Perhaps a little confusing 'cause they're mapped in memory opposite of alphabetical order.

copy /b 7609h.bin+7609g.bin 2716h.bin
copy /b 7609f.bin+7609e.bin 2716g.bin

Use the MAME files, and substitute in the previously posted hacked files where desired.

Yeah you can do that too. It was easier to say merge all 4 and split than merge H and hacked, g, then e and f.

I think, for whatever reason, every rom I was trying is/was too slow. I'm erasing some ones I know work good so I'll see if those work. As long as S6 is jumpered for 2716 they should work fine, at least my logic analyzer says so.

Here's the info I have found on S6...

Well, one of the two roms I erased won't program anymore (another test rom down the drain), but the one that did erase reads fine, so I guess something about the 10 other types of roms I tried just did not work right.

Giving up and just going to replace all the rom sockets and re-install 2708's on this one. I can't win. Tried 27128, 2764, 2732, 2716's with no luck.

Of course those didn't work either :-( They read fine (via Fluke) but the board just will not boot from anything I put into it. Not sure if its a timing issue or what...can't be data or addressing since everything looks good at this point.

Ok, so it took me a while to sort out the numerous issues I was having, most of which were my bench power supply being a P-O-S. Anyways, I verified this free play hack DOES WORK on real Gun Fight hardware, both the original actual hack and the second version with the FREE PLAY verbage :) I also verified the side-effect that if the board is coined, it will always have that credit and NOT run the attract mode, so you may want to disable the coin door somehow (Piece of tape on second pin from right on larger top edge connector of daughter board works too.).

If you're single rom modding, and you already combined the images into one big image, here's the changes to make:

The addresses to zero out for the actual hack are 0x576 and 0x577

To add the free play verbage....paste this data at F99 (so F99 to FA7):
46 4F 45 45 40 4E 4A 41 55 40 40 40 40 40 40

Orion, anyway you could email me the two rom files so that I can burn on my 2732s(or 2716s)please? And also what location you put them in on the pcb? I'm just a guy that barely knows how to burn a chip and erase them haha!!

Awesome that you got them to work especially the "free play" one!

Thanks for any help!

Cool. Thanks for the follow-up. I'll post the freeplay files on my webpage.
