Does anyone know how to use this, worth keeping?

its a Kirby flyback transformer tester model 98. how do you use this?

No problem. All of my equipment is old as dirt. And used. And most came without manuals. So I've gotten pretty good at googling for them. (this one was easy, BTW. :)
 
Multimeters only apply a few volts to the device. That will never catch failures that only appear at kilovolts. I suspect that the tester will test the xfmr under somewhat realistic operating conditions...ie high voltage. Of course, I could be completely wrong too. I guess we'll find out after wickedbass gets the manual. :)

well ill order it but im gonna have to forward it to one of you guys to explain to me..lol

BTW what are "shorts"
 
short circuit, something that allows an electrical current move other in a path other than waht was originally intended. eG a broken wire in a component arcing or touching to ground
