I was at a friend's place yesterday looking at some games and noticed the Gyruss conversion he had. I had never seen this marquee before and was wondering if anyone knew its history. I really love the artwork and would like to pick one up. He mentioned that the Gyruss he grew up playing had the same marquee.

Since that is in a Stern Scramble cabinet, I suspect it may be from a conversion kit. Since it has all of the copyright information on it, it probably is authentic as I seriously doubt any bootlegger would go to that extent in the art.

And since many of Stern's titles were licensed Konami ones, it's highly likely Konami (or Stern) provided an official kit for their cabinets that would fit.

Edit: Here's links to the flyer for a kit... indeed one was made, sadly no pic of the included marquee: http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=1283

Licensor reserves the right to inspect this machine anytime. That's funny to me for some reason. I wonder if they ever sent around a Gyruss inspector? Hey kid, get off that machine. Why sir? Can't you read the sign? I am the Gyruss inspector!

Yeah, that's the conversion kit marquee. It's a vinyl sticker you apply to plexi. I think I may have one of them... but it's probably not in very good shape.

I'd never seen that before now... pretty cool, but honestly, I like the regular marquee and cocktail underlays better. That's just...wierd.
