My pet peeve for sure, is when eBay buyers send me messages to tell me to make sure their item is packed well. Like I was just gonna throw it in a box unless you said otherwise? I hate that I read the damn message thinking it might be something important. Argh!

It used to bother me a little now I just ignore it, but every time I hear that my spidey sense goes off a little. Good thing it doesn't happen much to me anymore, because the people that take the time to tell you to pack it well are the same people the majority of the time that still find something to complain about after the fact even though it was packed well...like they are just digging to find something to complain about to validate themselves.

I am guilty of doing that, because there are a lot of clueless morons selling on Ebay, I had a really rare $200 1/64 blister pack diecast car sent to me in a manila envelope, I assumed they guy would have a clue to put it in a box but no, luckily the PO didn't smash that one. I have had way to many things sent to me way underpacked.

I understand why they say it.

9/10 people, pack items they ship in an unacceptable way. (My opinion)

I just reassure them that I will pack it very well and the item should arrive safely.

Yeah, I've received damaged items several times because sellers failed to pack it right. Not all sellers give a damn, so I wouldn't mind a buyer voicing their concern on shipping an item well.

I have received damaged items too from terrible packing. Don't take offense, if someone is spending their hard earned cash to buy your product, and they ask to have it packed well, please just do exactly that.....pack it well, and send them a reassuring message.

I don't see anything AT ALL to get annoyed about. If you buy something you spend your money on, I am sure you want it packed well too. No?

Too many horror stories about terrible packers.

Why would it bother you? I regularly receive items improperly packed, I've had to demand a few refunds lately. I always pack well (2" packing on each side min). As a buyer I don't bother asking any more as my experience is that sellers (esp eBay) either do or dont and me asking makes little diff. If it arrives damaged I just demand they resolve it and eventually they'll figure it out. I certainly don't mind when people ask me.

+1 Exactly. If I buy anything, especially something fragile, I want assurance it is packaged properly and will arrive undamaged. Had too many issues in the past - broken laptop, damaged oscilloscope, etc. For these items I ask that they are double boxed. If not, and damage happens, I have written proof of the request and, perhaps, more of an argument that the seller did not meet the definition of the sale.

Why would it bother me? Because it defies common sense. If I wasn't going to package it decently to begin with, a message sure as hell ain't going to change what I do. You are either going to get someone who takes time to ship it right, or you aren't. No message will change it.

I guess the other irritating part is making the assumption that it is the ONLY thing I am doing that day. I ship 20-50 items a day, 100% feedback with 1000s of positive feedback. How much more assurance do you need?

I agree on the no message will change it. Not sure on the defies common sense or why you let it bother you. They are your buyer, they're just trying to get their stuff.

Common sense. (Laughes)

If the only thing in life I have to bitch about is a message asking me to do what should be common sense, but clearly isn't, based on the stories over the years, I'd consider myself pretty damn lucky.

Eh, I've said it, or specified boxing or backing. It helps sometimes to be specific. Especially when repeat buying from someone you know packs like an asshole.

Why? I've had too many packages get busted up.

Does it annoy me when asked? No. Firstly because I can sympathize. And secondly because I am not a psycho.

not really. people just wanna make sure their stuff is packed well. it's a reasonable request in light of some of the terrible shipping jobs I've seen documented here.

I don't mind and I will take additional pictures and even video if requested. And selling on Craiglsist over the years I'm used to tire kickers and they don't even bother me anymore. That's just the name of the game with selling stuff. I personally have a 100% feedback rating on Ebay and I even always try to ship the very next morning after payment is received even when it risks my boss being pissed at me for being late for work, especially when I've shipped stuff out two days in a row, lol. I put my work into making sure that buying from me is as fast and good as possible...

it usually just means that the last time they bought something similar the ebay asshole they bought it from didn't package it correctly
probably not a reflection upon you & your packaging skills specifically
i never say it i just expect it

I typically ask that, because I continue to receive items that are poorly or underpacked. Just happened last week (I didn't ask them to pack well, so maybe I should have!).

This whole forum is filled with horror stories about stuff just thrown loose in a box and send on its way only to arrive broken, I have had very expensive boards arrive loose in a box with just one layer of bubble wrap or three pieces of newspaper by people who are in the scene for a long time and should have known better so yeh , I totally understand why they ask that .

I've advised sellers before to please back shipments well, but if I'm going to say it, I don't leave it that vague, but typically include WHY I think it's worth sending a special message. I've had too many old items (especially cast iron which is like glass when dropped) show up shattered because people didn't pack it correctly. And if something is still in an original box and it matters (like a video game system), I've been surprised more than one when someone just sticks a shipping label on the box instead of packing the whole thing....

A million times yes on the backing. Mailman always folds shit packed flat or in an envelope. Including the NOS Defender overlay and 2x NOS red tent overlays I bought here that came packed between a folded piece of cardboard. Thanks to those 2 guys btw.

It's good to know that OP is too cool and busy to care about his buyers' concerns and stuff though. Obviously that is the impression I'm left with. Was I supposed to glean some other nugget of a life lesson from someone crying about fielding emails? :/

I've gotten an insane amount of poorly packed items. I used to be less likely to say anything but over the years I've gotten more and more likely to say something because there are just SO MANY people out there that will do stupid shit. Especially with NOS artwork. They always have some exposed tape or adhesive strip they'll put on there that will lift the graphic right off when trying to open the package or it's just freely scraping around inside the box.

If you want to feel less irritated about it, start buying stuff. The first time somebody sends you that PCB you've wanted for 5 years in a thin, flat box that shows up all dinged to hell you'll stop being annoyed by it.
