Does anyone fix lcd's?

depends on your definition of not working I guess.

easiest last ditch effort to try first is to just open it up and disconnect and reseat everything. if it's an issue with it not powering on, I'd say caps in the power supply section. if it powers up but you don't see anything, backlight, right? I think it's pretty straightforward in concept.. as far as fixing it, that's different.

Probably a bad power supply. I recapped the power supply in a 15" HP lcd a few weeks ago with a similar problem, and it brought it back to life. I found all the caps I needed at radio shack.

Edit: I was too slow. ;)

I'm picking up a Samsung this weekend to fix for a friend. normally it's the caps as everyone else has pointed out :D

The power indicator light comes on for a second, then right back off.

Don't know what brand you have there. The General Touch monitors that I have worked on are pretty easy to fix. Most of the boards are under $ 70.00 new. Most of these monitors only have 3 pcb's in them.

Keep in mind, if you have a 19" computer monitor and your repairs are over $100. Junk it for parts and buy a new one for between $100-$150.

I just picked up my buddies 32" samsung. Found 1 cap jiffy popping as expected above the ribbon cable. going to replace them all (12 in total), picked up a cap kit on ebay for $16 shipped (15 or so caps) all 105c rated and quality name.

Once they come in i'll update the status of this repair. I didn't power it up when i got it, i just took his word that when turned on the power light comes up but no video.

Caps are one of the biggest problems on LCD monitors. That, and broken solder joints, particularly around torroids and....gah...those little things that look like transformers. Word escapes me.

Replace the caps, go over the solder joints, and I'll bet it's good for another 50,000 miles.

Just make sure they are the right **type** of capacitor. Don't just go with 105C type...that will get you almost anything in just an extended temp cap. These go into a switching power supply and they *MUST* be a low-ESR type capacitor.
All low-ESR type caps are 105C but not all 105C caps are not low ESR.

More evidence of the kind of crap coming out of China and elsewhere - works and looks great for awhile then the problems start.....

Did not see this frequency of blown cap issues before everyone threw quality out the window in favor of price.

this is great info. thank you.
i have a chinese cheap lcd that has a weird screen until it warms up for 30 seconds. i thought they were just throw away items.
will have to pop it open and check out the caps....

$18 well spent, i was lazy and didn't feel like finding each cap in 105c rated so i bought off a guy on ebay, i needed 12 caps he sent 15 and some solder.

30minutes later i have a working Samsung 32" tv. it was great practice as i haven't had to cap any of my arcade monitors yet.
