Do you put the art, the part or the cart before the horse?

There have been alot of repro parts and artwork done over the years in limited runs that will never be run again. So, do you buy those pieces and stash em in a closet knowing that someday you will have the actual game? It definitely seems a backwards way to go about it but every time i've done this, my search for a machine ends in a month or less. I'm trying my luck again by purchasing some missile command stuff, we'll see what happens.

Most of the common games will always be available, but if you find NOS or parts that are hard to find, then yes. My experience is, I buy crap and never get to it, then I wasted the money! Good luck finding that balance of buying and saving vs hording

Usually what happens for me is this scenario:

1) Find a game that doesn't work that i really like but needs restoration. Stick it in storage.

2) Start tracking down artwork and any hardware that may be missing or not easily fixed.

3) Once I finally have all the pieces, I think, "YES! Now I can restore that game back to it's original minty condition!"

4) Everything sits in a closet in a box because I don't have the time or space to get it finished.

Now - sometimes I may buy stuff I plan to have someday in the hopes that something will pop up, or if it was a kit originally and I can stick it into a cab someday, but I have so much stuff already that i usually let it sit until "someday"...

Even I buy art when I know its available thinking/knowing that Id like to have/restore that game at a later date.
I bought all the Dragons Lair Art kit from Arcade renovations when they frst ran it what 8 years ago??
I finally got a cab last month.
even the common stuff may not be reran as far as silkscreening goes
DK art is finally dwendling and Mario Bros Side art comes to mind
so now whatcha goin do?
For shame : (

I typically buy artwork that comes out that I might be interested in doing a restoration on even though I don't have the cabinet. Then when I do get the cabinet, I usually end up selling all the stuff I've gathered over the years with the cabinet at a loss to somebody who gets the game up and running in about 3 days. I gotta quit buying stuff I don't need but I was hunting for Spyhunter side art for years . Now that it is being done, I don't have a cabinet anymore.

Yes!! High Five!!

I do it both ways. I've bought artwork for games I have that I will eventually get around to restoring, and bought stuff for games I haven't gotten yet (but will). The one that really comes to mind is buying a Q*bert swearing marquee about 2 years before actually getting a cab.
