Do you prefer mode based games (TZ,TAF) or objective based games (MM,AFM)?

I've always been a mode based guy myself, but lately I've been finding myself playing more objective based games at the arcade. I think I'm somewhere right in the middle right now. How about you guys?

For me, it's more the flow of the game. I find Twilight Zone to be way too stop and go for me. For that reason, I'll never own one. AFM is fast and flows well (again, my opinion). RFM is a little more stop and go, but not to the point that I did not want to own one.

I prefer fast games. Give me a BK or BK2K over IJ or TZ any day.

:) Just my opinions. The fact that everyone is different sells games.

I have all four of them (MM, AFM, TZ and TAFG).

I play MM and AFM the most. The problem I find with TZ and TAF is that they get somewhat old but I do enjoy a game of TAF every now and then.

As far as buying a MM or an AFM you will have a much harder time finding them compared to a TZ or a TAF. They made several times the quantity of TZ/TAF.

So to answer your question: I am more of an objective based pin guy.

I like the objective based. The best objective game in my opinion is Spiderman (Stern).

You much beat the villians - venom, sandman, Goblin and doc ock, three times each to advance the game into the wizard mode. Its the only pin where i feel like i am in an epic battle to kick these guys azz. Really well done. Add to that the great shots and wicked fast play.

I like TZ as well, advancing through the modes - so i am a little of both.

That's funny, I always considered Spider-Man a mode based game....there are five Modes - Rescue MJ, New Goblin, Bonesaw, Daily Bugle, and Amazing Spider-Man. You need to play all of these to advance toward the REAL Wizard Mode- SUPER HERO. I guess the villains would be "objectives"? I just considered them mini-modes or something...heh. Defeating all villains once gets you Extra Ball lit, twice gets you Battle Royale lit, and three times is required along w/ the white modes for Super Hero.

Good question. I find that I like both and most good games will have a mix of both. The one thing I really like about modes is the ability to stack them strategically or with multiball.

The first few times I played Pinball Magic I really didn't like it because I was way over-thinking it. It's really a very linear, straightforward game and I was trying to figure out how to "start" something.

Why not both? :) Stargate has two wizard modes, one for objective, one for mode. I'm not sure why none of the other older games really do that.

Any auctions near you? Enough Spideys were on route that you might be able to get a decently priced used one. I was amazed to see one go for $2100 at an auction about a month ago....could have been a buy-back though....if not - dayum.

Wow. I am the exact opposite.... I play the game aiming to beat the villians - the modes i treat as the side missions! I have a new way to look at the game - thanks Greg.

Agree - that you need them all to get to super hero. Since to get there you need to beat the villians three times also... so the game is Mode + Objective based...

Heck, i am happy just to get to Battle Royale. Guess i need to raise my bar.

there are two auctions within 4-5 hours of me. i try to hit a few every year.....usually just to look and play though. i've only been to one auction with cash on hand to buy something and that was before i was so big into pins.

the last couple of auctions i've been to have had crap for pins though. maybe i'll get lucky one of these days.

I'll be honest, whether the software is mode based or objective based is pretty irrelevant to me. It has little to do with the fun factor of the game. A much bigger factor is flow of the game versus stop and go (I prefer nonstop actions), the speed of the game (I definitely favor fast games over slow ones), and whether the sounds and such are annoying or not.

I can enjoy playing just about any pinball machine, but definitely my favorites have a lot of speed, satisfying shots, combo shots, not a lot of ball stops.

Seems like stop and go machines take a lot of heat around here, but to be honest that doesn't bother me at all. I've got space in my gameroom for just one more pin, and I think I've changed my mind on what it should be every week. My top choice right now is an AFM, just because i love the game and it would be my first objective based machine. I was thinking about a Flintstones for a little bit, just for the unique features it's got, but AFM still trumps it. Now I'm thinking about a ToM, which is a machine I thought for a while would be my first machine. It's a great game that has both objectives and modes, the modes being one of the objectives. We'll see how long this lasts before I change my mind again.

Yeah, if you're ignoring the modes, you're also most likey missing out on collecting Spiders, combos and setting up multipliers. Every time you collect all the white arrows - they all flash. Shoot a flashing one to set that shot for a multiplier, then either orbit shot will start the mode. If you complete the mode (not just let it time out), you'll get another opportunity to set a white arrow as a multiplier. You lose multipliers if you lose a ball, but if you can keep a few going, it can really benefit your score - especially if your multiplier is on a Super Jackpot shot.

Did you know there's a Combo Multiball? 50 combos starts it. I've only done it once. LOL.

All this Spidey talk is making me jealous! I love the game but only get to play it on route, about an hour from where I live, and its STILL $1 credits! But I do what I can to support 'local as it gets for me' pinball. Thanks for all the tips!
