We all know that on the Buckner and Garcia album sleeve, they show you how to beat the Keys in Pac Man. And recently, someone here posted some how to's for TRON. I was wondering who likes to learn from those VS. learning on their own?

I like knowing it's there if I truly can't figure it out on my own, but I don't like to look at those things unless I really have to. Then again, this is a different era than when these games were originally out in the Wild. After blowing some serious cash and not moving forward back then, I probably would have thought differently. :D

Not like this generation. My kid bought home a new xbox game the other day and the first thing he did was get online looking for cheats. Hell, he hadnt even played the game yet

Well in some of the newer games there are codes that unlock characters, cars, etc that you won't see otherwise. But if he was just looking for ways to beat the game already, for shame.......... ;)

I prefer to learn patterns/stategies on my own. It's more rewarding when you eventually reach your goal.

Heck, even going on YouTube for DK's 3rd Elevator Level hint, I still can't crack 200K on the game. Go figure...

I'm never going to be world class at a game, and learning a pattern to repeat each time I play seems to take the fun out of it for me.

I'd rather mess around and slowly figure things out on my own as I get better at it. Once I top out, then I may go looking for a few tips, but I wouldn't look stuff up right from the start.

I have had the same light cycle patterns that I have use for over 20 years.

Not sure if I ever saw them in a book or not. I never did buy any of those books as a kid.

LOL I have done it so far with the first 3 light cycle boards, but the one on Fortran is currently making me look like a total moron. :)

You wanna turn the tables? Just hold the joystick left, no trigger and let it go slow speed...you'll be amazed :D

Edit: (in reply to Tron_Guy)
Me too, although I didn't have a decent 9th light cycle pattern until recently (which I didn't come up with on my own...saw a youtube video or something) I think I came up with most of mine (except the above mentioned one for 4th level/Fortran). Although I saw some old magazine scans recently, and one of them had Tron patterns and they were almost all the same as mine...I don't remember having that magazine issue as a kid, but perhaps I did.

Personally, I like to play the game on my own for awhile ... but, at some point something inside me takes over and I want to MASTER it.

It is at that point where I start looking for tricks, tips, patterns, etc.

Same with pinball ... when I get a new pin, I refuse to look at the game rules for that particular game. I would rather try to figure it out on my own and then, later, go back and look through the rulesets to see if I might have missed something.

A few years ago, I picked up a nice Dr. Who locally and the next day I read the entire rule sheet and tip sheet for the game. Within a week, I was bored to tears of the game and sold it.

My two cents ...

I looked at the patterns on Ms Pacman and tried them but I must not be doing it right because they didn't work any better that just straight up playing the game. I can make it all the way up to the Banana Level just by playing and honestly If I can get that far I on my own I'm fairly happy. To me that was a good game and I can walk away for it with the satisfaction that I did it on my own Without pattern cheats. I know I'm never going to beat the high score might as well just have some fun.
