Was planning on buying a game that I've been looking for, till I found out the guy wanted to charge me Sales Tax on top of the price he was selling it for. Wouldn't have been that bad, but since he was wanting a bit more than what I've seen them go for, the Sales Tax thing just killed it for me. So, does anyone else charge Sales Tax?

Do I charge sales tax? No, cause I'm not a douche bag. I don't understand these pin/arcade flippers that do that. So freaking lame.

I have never been charged sales tax. Not even from operators. If a operator asked for it I would understand because its a business.

If it's a dealer who has a responsibility to collect sales tax on behalf of the state then can you blame him? It's not "his" money. As a cash sale you can bet that they aren't paying it (even if they say they are).

But if it's going through the business as a check or some other documented funds, it's going to have tax unless you have a resale certificate and you are reselling it.

But a private sale, no way.

I was charged sales tax from an operator today. I didn't fuss since it is a business, like stated above. It is the first operator out of the 4 I have dealt with to charge tax.

Edit: I was also given a formal itemized receipt for the sale.

I understand if it is a business. But when someone lists the game at a set price and then tells you when you call about the game that tax will be included just pisses me off. Add the damn tax onto the final price if you need it so bad. Since someone brought up the whole business thing. What if the guy is running an arcade and selling off games in his arcade, would he charge a tax on those?

If its just an individual then ask to see his sales tax certificate. If he can not produce one then he is not allowed to charge tax. If he does produce one then it also has to do with the product he is trying to sell. I own my own business that is far from arcade sales but i would not be able to sale an arcade game and charge tax for it. Sounds like he might have been trying to pull one over on you and trying to make a few more bucks on it.

I bought my Super Chexx bubble hockey from a route operator for $300. I agreed on the price and then he told me there was sales tax on top of it. I said "Really?" and just looked at him. He said "Eh, forget the sales tax", and I got it for $300.

Not sure if he decided to eat the sales tax or if he never intended to really pay it in the first time but he sure rolled over easy about it.

i dont report arcade sales as income, because its usually a losing proposition anyways...

so no, im not collecting tax on something not worth reporting..

Like others have said.. the only time i was charged sales tax was when buying from a business. If the guy is just selling out of his garage .. more than likely he was just trying to get a bit more money and would have pocketed anyway. I would post a response to his craigslist ad letting everyone know what a douche he was.

If someone wanted to charge me tax I would call their bluff and say no problem put it on my credit card, then I would ask for their tax ID number so I could confirm that tax was paid.

As stated - if sales tax is collected then they have to have a tax ID number. Tell them you need it for your accounting records. If they can't (or won't) produce one, pull out your phone and say, "That's okay. Let's just call the Tax Assessor's office and get the info from them." If they are BSing you, they'll back off.

Considering some people have mentioned getting letters from the IRS about income taxes due to "numerous sales" or a "hobby business", some people may just be covering their ass.

And of course, there are those few select people who follow every rule even if they don't have to. Might be some guy who always drives the speed limit, always has his hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, and collects and submits sales tax revenue even when selling a broken lawnmower for $10....

Just like in Florida if you buy something from another state and ship
It in to Florida you are supposed to send the florida the sales tax
You would owe. "honor" system.

I bet the mailroom in the department of revenue would crap if they got a check for that.

It holds for bartering as well. I believe that if you trade your game for someone else's game you are each supposed to pay sales tax on the value of the game you received as well. I'm sure you will all get right on that now that you know.

I've decided just not to deal with him. The sales Tax isn't that much, but since he is asking more than what the game is worth on top of the sales tax. He can keep it and I'll keep looking.

i've never charged sales tax but i have been charged once by one op, although on the first transaction i did with him he did not. no one else i've bought from has ever charged sales tax.
