Do the following games have free play/high score save mods?

Need to find a way to put these on free play (without adding external buttons) and if possible do high-score saving. If there are public rom hacks I can use to burn my own, please link them. If I have to buy the kits, please link them if you know them. I haven't checked all the dip switches to see if there is a free play setting, but I'd prefer one with attract mode. I can also do the 1-up mods for free play, but that doesn't save high scores. These games are in an office and they're on a timer now so that they aren't left on 24/7, and they're complaining they lose high scores every night.

Thanks.

List:

Karate Champ (yes I know it can be put on free play, but with static screen and 2-player games never end)

Tron

Phoenix

Spy Hunter

DK Jr cocktail (4-brd set)

Gauntlet II (Think it has free play, but high score save?)

SFII CE (same as Gauntlet)

Bud Tapper

Karate Champ: there's a freeplay and HSS kit for sale for it. Souza, I believe.

Tron: There are freeplay ROMs for free, burn your own: http://www.arcadecollecting.com/hacks/tron/

Phoenix: A guy sells freeplay roms for it. Jeff?

Spy Hunter: There are freeplay roms available. mjenison did it. http://users.rcn.com/jenison/mars/romhacks/

DK Jr.: souza did a freeplay (with attract mode) mod. The Braze kit provides freeplay as well as high score saving: http://www.brasington.org/arcade/products/hs/dkj/

Gauntlet II: I thought it had factory high score save (2804 EEPROM?)

Tapper: A freeplay hack from mjenison is out there: http://users.rcn.com/jenison/mars/romhacks/

Mark Jenison has a bunch of freeplay hacks he created up on his website here:

http://users.rcn.com/jenison/mars/

One of those included is for Spy Hunter. You do have to use a patcher program (he has a link to these on the same page above) to create the hacked version yourself, though.

I made the 2 patched ROMs myself for a friend awhile back, but I haven't had the chance to test them in his machine yet.

Shoot me a PM with your email address and I can send them to you via your email if you like and maybe you can give them a try. :)

I can burn my own, but how hard is it to do the patching? Can you do it with the MAME ROM and then burn it, or fo you have to do it directly to the chip?

I appreciate the patches and the patcher, but some instructions would be nice...

Tron, Spy Hunter, and Tapper already save high scores. You just need to install a new ni-cad (off the board preferably), do the lithium coin cell mod, or install a NVRAM at B2.

Nope.
Have no idea what is in Onecircuit... I'm ASSUMING it's a microcontroller.

Mine is an opensource circuit I designed for the myself - The community is welcome to use it or not.

Correct; the circuit does not handle two player / credits in it's existing configuration.
I imagine - you could tie another circuit board to the 2nd start button and it'd credit up instead of playing. IE press 2nd player twice. Meaning when they press a 2player game; it wouldn't start because of insuffient credits and the circuit would trigger another credit so 2player would work again.

You proably wouldn't need a second board... the first with another diode connected in parallel to D4 would do the trick. IE connect the new diode's Anode to D4's anode. The connect the kathode of the new diode to the 2P button. They'd still have to press 2p twice; but it would work. You'd proably also want to reduce R5 to 15K or maybe even 10K to shorten the timing of the credit delay.

Not a ripoff... similar solution... different approach that's all. I chose the micro because it:

  • 1) Reduces the cost and # of components (the AVR has optional internal pullups and open collector outputs)

  • 2) Is completely programmable.

#2 is what allows me to support various coin configurations per game and allows me to change the coin pulse width on the fly for Sega Vector support.

Hell I could reprogram the thing and use it as a rapid fire module if I wanted to. ;)

DK Jr cocktail (4-brd set)

What board is that? DK Jr only came in a 2-board set as far as I know, unless you have a hacked one (I have a 4-board TRS-2 Radarscope board that was hacked to run DK, then DK Jr later on). Just curious :)

I just used the MAME Rom set so again, I don't know if it will work in an actual machine as I haven't had a chance to try it on my friend's machine. I am probably going over to his place on Monday actually so maybe we'll try to give it a whirl.

The patching did take some figuring out on my part...I had to follow the instructions that were included in the program readme file, and also do the deed using the command prompt from within Windows. There may well be an easier way to do it, but that's how I figured it out :) .

Honestly, I'd have to revisit what I did again to remember how I did it ;) ... but again, I have the file at the ready if you want me to send it.

LMK...

Opensource the microcode. Hint:hint:nuduge:nudge:

Good work on the avr. IT did appear you had nothing on the board but a microcontroller, switches, and a screw terminal.
