Do people ever try and make you feel embarassed about owning games?

Most people have a positive reaction about the arcade machine games I own but sometimes people will come over and give me a blank stare. I guess they can't understand why a 33 year old is still wasting his time restoring and playing video games. Do you guys ever get mixed reactions from people who just don't seem to understand?

Yeah all the time, but that is their problem not mine. :)

I don't own any yet, but I had that happen to me on the original Xbox. We had 2 Xbox's and since I'm an IT guy, I had our whole house networked way before most people were doing it. And when I'd tell them about playing halo on each box against one of my kids, I'd get some type of reaction either directly or indirectly about it being childish.

Some that would do it, I'd have over and tell them to look. They ended up seeing why it seemed cool to me.

People either "get it" or don't. I have yet to see much of an in-between.

Everybody I know who spent a fair amount of time in an arcade in the late 70's - early 80's gets it.

Not really but I would probalbly reply with something like...

" Yeah, I know you're too tight to buy this kinda stuff. Don't worry I like you anyway."

or

" Yeah I know, too bad you don't have enough space in your house for alot of toys."

or

" Yeah repairing this stuff is above your head huh? "

Networking Doom got me into my IT job :)

Well I am 38 and the answer is no.

If you are 33 that means you were the little brother who tagged along with the big brother :)
back in the day.

I have yet to find one of my peers who does NOT want to come to my house for a game night. You can go to anybodys house to play 360. But my garage is the only place with pinballs and retro games set on free play :)

All I can say is if you don't have a pinball, add one to the collection. Make sure its set up properly and working 100%. I would bet you would have a lot less blank stares. Better yet, add a pinball and a billiards table. If they say they don't get it, tell them game rooms add a shitload to your home's equity just like home theaters, saunas/hot tubs, and in ground pools.

Hey now, as true as that may be, it still introduced me to Sluggo's arcade at the time:D And I still remember the day I kicked his tale all over the place playing Star Wars. There's nothing more degrading then having a half pint beating his older brother's score horribly.....in front of his friends.

Yeah, some try. ;)

Like everyone else said so far, it's their problem.

It's funny... most of the time it'll be the mothers of my children's friends who'll say stuff like that. Only problem for them is my wife is very much into the games so she doesn't stand for it. :D

Yep somewhat, happened today actually.

I own a restaurant and my backroom, where my office is houses my collection. My employees never play them while at work and I have told them off the clock they can play them after work when we are closed. They have always been respectful of this.

I was at another restaurant today (same franchise). Their store was an absolute filth-hole that made me ashamed to be in the same company. The manager and the owner made some kinda comment like "there are no games here to play with" and my repsonse was "jealous or something? even with my games I find the time to pick up a rag and clean from time to time, what is stopping you".

If they don't get it screw em I say.

I tell people who ask in honesty. Everyone has that thing they wanted when they were a kid, that they said "When I grow up and have some money I will have a...". For some it is a porsche, or others it is a huge TV. For me it was my own arcade.

SO I get to live a dream, no one will ever make me feel bad for that.

People that would say stuff like that just don't get invited to my house. Video games was my career before so there's not much anyone could say. The fact that I own a bunch of arcades now is cool to many of my friends. This collection popped up in the last 2 years and most of my friends have enjoyed it.

My mum and my wife are always telling me i'm 34 its about time i grew up and stop playing games. But why should i, i love playing video games always have always will. I will still be playing them even when im 90.

Nope. Worst i got was some douchebag college kid who was friends with my girlfriend's friends, and happened to tag along one day. As soon as he walked in the door, he said my NES was dumb because it was old and had bad graphics, he could get my swords for much cheaper than I bought them for, and my arcades were overpriced. He has never been back to my house, and was pretty much shunned by my girlfriend's friends since then. Oh, and he ended up getting fired from his knife shop in the mall job about a month later. Karma's a bitch.

I've been in the coin op biz since I was 15 year old. I started my first game route at 15 while high school. I'm 42 now.
Whenever someone gives me crap about what I do for a living (they all seem to think I just plays games all day) I just tell them about my house I bought at age 21, the 4 new cars and trucks I've bought over the years, show them the Rolex on my wrist, mention I work for myself and pretty much do what I want when I want. When I ask them if they can take off to see a movie at 2 pm on a Tuesday, they say no, I have to work. D'oh!

People seem to think if you love your job/work then it can't be a job/work. Just because they are miserable at their job they think it should be like that for everyone.
