I just got in some DL sideart. Both left and right side. They were sent at the same time, same tube... why do they look so different?

I feel like I should contact the company about this, but I'm not sure if I'm just blowing things out of proportion.

The whole piece is like that with the second one...

Should I call them and complain? And how do I go about doing that? They were bought for me by someone else as part of a DL kit...

It's not like I was hunting for anything wrong either... as soon as I unrolled them, I instantly noticed the lines... so it's very VERY noticeable.

Looks like they were scaled incorrectly, ones smaller than the other. If you are fixing it up to sell it, I say not to worry about it. But if you are restoring it for yourself, its your decision if it bugs you that much.

That would bug me. It's not just the character... it's the whole side. It appears all the black lines ended up bolder somehow on one.

It would bug me everytime I looked at it. I would contact the company and see how they respond.

Yeah, that receipt showed nothing! ;)

I didn't think it was a big secret... they're the only company licensed to reproduce the art for the game, so... yeah.

It's not worth the trouble to find a private company that prints the art because I've never heard anything especially negative about their product.

Now... when it come to Pac/MsPac art, believe me... I won't use the "official" company because almost everything I read about them is negative.

I'm still not going to say anything negative about QA until I talk with them about that one piece, I was just wondering if I was making a mountain out of a mole hill.

That said, I think I'll probably call them tomorrow and see how this is handled. It might not bother many people, but this DL is going to be my first complete restoration, back to "mint" if you will... so having one of the sideart pieces like that would really, really, REALLY bug the hell out of me. Once I'm finished with this cabinet it's never leaving my possession so I want it to be as perfect as possible.

Aka "Aw, crap!" I wondered if that was what it was, but I also thought it might have been an acronym for some mysterious screen-printing technique.

Yeah, the one on top almost looks like the skin color has those pixel like dots in it. Like you see in old comic books.

Even though they would be on two opposite sides of the cabinet, most may never notice.

But I agree, this would bother me, especially on a "restored" machine.
I mean.. two identical prints should be, well, "identical".

(and I like the thinner outlined version better)

Since you will never be looking at both simultaneously, it's probably not that big of a deal. However, there's nothing wrong with striking up a conversation with Anthony just to get his take on it (i.e. is it a mistake or is that kind of variation normal?). If the prints vary noticeably in their appearance, I would think he'd want to attempt to match them better when he pulls a pair for a customer.

Hi Scucci

I have spent a lot of time scrutinizing DL art as I have been researching it since 1993. I have even helped by donating some original DL art for reproduction purposes. ( I have a few sets of mint original NOS/Unused Dragons Lair CPOs/ side art and marquee overlays.

The reproductions were done by the only licensed business to reproduce Dragons Lair/Space Ace side art. However, this is two seperate places. Arcade Renovations did the reproductions first in 2001. About three years later, Philippe (the owner of Arcade Renovations) sold all of his remaining artwork inventory to Anthony Pietrak (of QuarterArcade) including the rights to copy DL/SA art. Anthony has since done a run of reproduction side art as well.

What you have there is one piece of side art from each seperate run. You have one piece which was first done by Arcade Renovations and it appears you have one done by QuarterArcade. (Even though you may have purchased them both from QuarterArcade, it appears that you received one piece from each run)

Neither run is considered more original because NOS DL side art did have this variation in their original art. I can understand, though, that you want two pieces that look exaclty alike.

Email Anthony. He will definitely respond to your request. He is an upstanding, honest guy and he will go to great lengths to make the customer happy. He is one of the better people in this hobby.

I hope this helps.

I'd honestly be MORE than happy to send the one on the right back to him out of my own pocket to get a replacement that matches the left... there's no question about that. I was going to call yesterday but got carried away at work and I can't call today because I can't talk because my throat is acting up (lucky me...). I just want to make it clean to him that I'm not try'ng anything weird and I don't want him to just lose a piece of art to sell because I'm so anal about stuff. Every piece of NOS or original DL art I've seen looks like the one of the left with the thinner lines... this is the first time I've seen any DL art with the thicker lines like that in person.

As far as only being able to see one side at a time... if that's the case, then most people with a row or two of arcade machines would only really need 2 pieces of side art, period... one for the left side of the first machine, and one for the right side of the last machine... ... you'd never see any of the art in the middle. :p

But this one is going to be one of my "center pieces" of the collection... I HATE being difficult about this stuff... I really do, but I want this one to look as perfect as possible (since I can't find black vinyl with the exact pattern).

I'll just shoot him an email I guess with the comparison pictures and see if I can get a replacement for the thicker one and send the one I have here back.

Here's what mine looks like. These are from the original run made by Philippe at Arcade Renovations.

Agreed! I haven't dealt much with QA so far but one time recently he went above and beyond in correcting an artwork issue I had that I couldn't have blamed him for if he did nothing. Anthony = great customer service.
