I picked up a working DK3 today..

Couple questions I'm hoping some DK/DK3 experts can answer.

As I understand it.. all DK3's are conversions from popeye, dk, or dk jr.
Any idea what my machine used to be? It has two serial plates on the
back

Model # TKG4-UP-US
Model # DKC1-UP-US

My guess is a DK since it has DK blue sides.

The blue vinyl on the sides/front is perfect but the artwork is 1/2 pulled off.
How can I remove the artwork without harming the underlying blue vinyl?

Do Dk's all have carriage bolts on the sides?

What size locks were used on the coin door and back door?

TKG4 is Donkey Kong. 4= 4 board version, UP = upright cab. Not sure what DKC1 is.

If it's all original it isn't vinyl, it's laminate. You can remove the sideart by heating it up with a hair dryer (or a heat gun, but be VERY careful or you'll scorch the cabinet) and pulling it off.

Yes.

Can never remember, they're either 3/8" or 5/8".

TKG4-UP = Donkey Kong
Not familiar with the other serial tag.

The conversion kits came with new serial tags so it's not uncommon for games to have multiple serial tags. I would say yours was a DK originally.

It's not vinyl. It's a sort of enamel paint.

Remove the old artwork with heat and a plastic scraper. Use a hair dryer or a heat gun. Just don't go NUTS. Use heat and especially scrapping carefully. I would do more of a "pulling action" instead of scrapping.

Yes, all Ninty cabs have the monitor bolts sticking out the side.

Locks should be 7/8". I like the Happ ones.

I had to use 5/8" locks on both the coin and rear doors.
Both have straight cams also.
The DKC-1 is probably the DK3 tag.

Ummm, TKG4 should be a 2-board upright. I believe 4 means the 4th revision of the board. TKG2's were Radarscope boards converted to DK, TKG3's were the 4 board sets, and were continued to be used in the cocktails after the uprights went to 2 board sets.

So I was able to get the side art mess of with a heat gun and
carefully peeling it.. but there are spots let where there is glue
residue and while I originally thought the side blue looks great..
It looks like cr@p compared to the blue under the sticker.

Can you recommend some cleaners to get rid of the build up
on the sides and the glue reside that wont harm the original paint.

I am going to convert it back to a DK I think. Maybe even pop a Double
DK board in there.

Converting it back to it's orginal state is a good idea.

You can use goo gone, or magic erasers for cleaning. Original Nintendo paint jobs are very durrable. I used spray paint remover on mine to remove some overspray from where somebody spraypainted the coin door and the spraypaint came off without any damage to the orginal paint job. Dirt and whatnot should clean up great, its the dings and scratches that are difficult.

Also, rather than a double DK board I'd reccomend getting a harness with an edge connector and using a DK 2-Board set and and DK Jr 2-Board set. Why? Because, the sound on the double donkey kong isn't accurate for donkey kong. Mario's walk will not sound right because it's running though DK Jr. analog circuitry. With an edge connector you can pretty easily switch the pcbs. The other thing you can do is buy a DKII kit and play DKII on your Donkey Kong Board.

That's really interesting. I put 7/8" locks on all my Ninty coin doors. Am I using a longer lock than was original? It certainly works.

This one:

I use Simple Green to clean my cabs when I get them.

DK paint and t-molding size?

Does anyone have a paint code that matches DK blue sides?

Now that I am cleaning it, I see a couple small areas near
the edges that could use a little touchup.

The t-molding was how wide?

Mike

If you're going to do touchup you need to get a code from your own cab. If you have a place that's chipping you can pull a chip from there. Otherwise pull a chip from somewhere that's not visible (like behind the coin door). That's the only way you're going to get a good match. Even then you may have to do a little trial and error to get it right.
