I got my DK working today, thanks to Dick and fixing my board !

very stoked... had to turn the sound down.. and I see the 'sound balance' adjustment... what does that do exactly? seems like my jump sounds are very loud.. the rest are normal..

btw.. it was running perfect, for about two hours and then my background music and jump sounds were gone , replaced with a constant loud humming / buzz.

turned it off, let it sit for a few hours, and then turned it back on and its been fine for hours..

anything to be concerned with?

Could be a heat related issue with your sound. Leave it on and see if your sound goes away again. If it does, pick up a can of Freeze Spray, let it fail again, and start spraying any chips that seem extra hot (careful not to burn yourself) on the CPU board.

The Audio section is near the P7 and P11 connectors (E11 to J16 or there abouts).

If you spray one and you get your sound back, then you know that chip is bad.

If nothing on the board feels hot, it could be the Audio Amp on the monitor. So check that too.

Ok.. good advice ..

But ! what DOES the sound balance pot on a DK do then?

it has one speaker, how can it balance that? or does it lower some sound effects and make others louder?

It does on my 4-board. It's weird, it operates exactly like a balance button on a stereo, except the game only has one button. Some say it's a balance between analog and digital sounds, but aren't they all digital sounds anyway?

Yes

No

DKjr (and DK) have two types of sound generation hardware, namely background music (for things like the introduction music) and digital sound triggers (for things like walking, jumping, coinup). Music is handled by a dedicated 8035 MPU. Sound triggers are handled by various dedicated analog and digital circuits
