DK project underway. - 99% DONE! 9-14-2010

I picked up a red DK a few weeks ago. It's in pretty good shape, but definately needs some work. It supposidly lived it's life at a bowling alley and then went to storage for more than a decade. I decided I would gut it, clean it, paint or vinyl it and put it back together as my keeper. I started simple and I'm rebuilding the cp, polishing up the bezel and marquee.

Today the real work began. The complete gutting! I found a chuck e cheese token inside as well as some of the missing coin mech bolts and nuts. I also found the bezel wood stop on the top that was missing. Now I need to start the cleaning. If anyone has tips etc on any rebuilding let me know. This is my first attempt and I'm in no hurry since I have another DK to play. Here's a few pics...... - Barry

You sure you wanna paint over/vinyl an original Red Nintendo cab? I don't think I would touch that.

I don't really, I may have to touch up the sides a bit. Unfortunately someone has already painted over the speaker and coin door panels with a brush. Any idea how to get that paint off w/o harming what's left underneath? - Barry

So I am definately NOT going to paint it. I used some goof off on the front panel and presto!, the paint came right off revealing the laminate in damn good shape. Lots of elbow grease ahead of me..... The haziness in the pic is the unremoved paint. -Barry

Why, exactly, would you even consider... repainting a red DK...?

Looks pretty nice!

I know, I know, chalk one up to stupidity. I started removing the paint from the speaker panel and it's in good shape except around the speaker grill. I'll get some matching paint and touch it up. - Barry

I did a little cleaning today and it's looking far better than I hoped. There is quite a bit of black overspray on it, but it comes off with goof off. Now I need to take a part in to get some color matched touch up paint. - Barry

Good call, keep the red for sure. I think they look much better because the blue are much more common. Good luck in your resto and at least you have another one to play.

If I ever ran into a red cab like that, I'd make it my DK3 cab. I like DK in the original blue. I think DK3 rocks in red.

Got my first item on my checklist done. The control panel is finished. I stripped it down and repainted the wood panel, installed new t-molding, cleaned up the buttons and joystick, got a new instruction card and polished up the original overlay. The overlay still has some scratches, but they aren't too noticeable. - Barry

Barry,

Looks great!

What did you use to polish the overlay? I need to do the same.

Novus #2 with a buffer at slow speed, then #2 by hand, and finally #1 by hand. The Novus products work wonders. I picked them up at Tap Plastics. - Barry

Cool. I will need to find a Tap Plastics location.

I just picked up a beautiful Ms Pac Marquee to go with the Minty cab, but there are some surface scratches...

I can loan you some Novus 1, 2, 3 until you get yours if you need it. I get mine from pinball suppliers.

Cool. Can I do it by hand or do I need a buffer? You can reply via email so that we dont hijack this thread.

By hand works, just a ton of elbow grease. I've used #3 on some other stuff and it works great for deeper scratches. - Barry
