Just picked up a DK table today that has a problem with the screen. has lines running both ways up and down. is it just out of adjustment or am i looking at some kinda big problem?

You have both a board issue and a monitor issue. The monitor could just be an adjustment but it is hard to tell from the pics.

sorry bout the crap pics i tried to get good pics but that was the best i could do. the game plays/sounds great, everything works really good. i've never done a cap kit before, is this hard? what kinda board problems would it be?

I just performed a cap kit on one of these monitors. It was my first and only cap kit completed so far.

It's kinda difficult but not as bad as I was expecting. Once I had the monitor PCB out, it started going very smoothly. I couldn't find my old soldering iron so I picked up an el cheapo over at Radio Sack, along with some solder and de-soldering wick/braid.

Took me about 3 hours, along with a couple breaks.

But, yeah, it does look like there is a board issue as well.

why would u think it would be the board by looking at the pics? i'm very new to this so i just want to know what i'm looking for. thank you all 4 your help.

The colored lines horizontally across the screen indicate a board problem.

The white haze with diagonal lines indicate that the brightness is turned up to high on the monitor.

I'm guessing the lines are a ROM issue, i've had similar issues with the past two games I've worked on. Both were fixed by removing, cleaning, and re-seating the socketed ROMS and cleaning connector pins .

At the very least I'd start by removing your board and looking over it for any excessive blemishes, corrosion, etc. This may or may not fix your problem but should be a good starting point either way.

one other thing is if i turn down the brightness you can't even see the picture at all. i'll pull the board tonight and check everything out.

pics may help..........
this is with the brightness turned down. it needs to be just about all the way up to see the screen / play the game.

ok i pulled the board, pulled all socketed roms and cleaned everything and put it all back together. no corrosion or blemishes the board looks very good. so now all colored lines across the board are gone but i still have the white lines going up and down. when playin the game you really can't see them at all but the screen is still very bright it's like the brightness won't turn down?

i don't see the cap kit on the Bob Roberts site. what would be another good place to buy from?

In the meantime you may want to adjust the main brightness on the flyback labeled "screen". Lower that, then adjust the sub brightness accordingly.
That will probably get it to look a little more acceptable. FYI, be careful around that flyback when it's on.

some fo these look like they have black paint on them? is that ok?
