DK problem w/ video !

Ok... got the board back in ...

still no good..

The first time powering it up, the first screen was good.. about 5 seconds later it turned upside down and garbled graphics.. see pic 1

The 2nd time I powered it up... first screen was ok.. then I coined up..

it read 23 credits... game started.. Mario froze.. and graphics were in wrong place etc..

for a moment i had extra mario's going across the entire top of the screen.. like 50 extra guys.. see pic 2.

Pull the boards apart and check for bad solder joints or a popped solder on the back of that socket.
I just fixed a DK Jr last week with that problem, I would guess poor handling caused the problem, someone pushing too hard on a chip seating it when it needed cleaned instead etc.

I did just that when testing for continuity...

but I will take apart and do it again... can't hurt !

Did the pictures I posted look familiar ? Gonna have to break down and order a Z80 just in case... just didn't order yetcause I was hoping to have more stuff to add to the order...

no I do not...

if can't go much further.. then afraid Its off to get fixed.. at a price..

about to go take it out and look at those solder traces again.... now.

I checked solder points and traces with a light... I dont see any damages, boards are pretty clean in fact...

The P3 connector on the Vid board... on the solder side.. should the two end pins towards 7 be touching or solder together? looks like someone did a bit of soldering there and they are fused together on the solder side.

I can see where on the Vid board where 5L chip had been replaced (by different solder) and possibly 1L (one leg solder looks different)

I'm stumped as to what next...

Man I can't believe that thing is that close to working and the problem is still on the loose.. I'll have to check the P3 thing, I can't remember.

is the problem ever these two ribbon cables that join the boards together??

they look fine... just throwing out crap ideas...

After reading this thread, it seems as if you didn't adjust the +5 much at all. If I read correctly you went from 4.97 to 5.02. When you adjusted the voltage to 5.22 it reads as if that was without a load.

I would also look at getting another set of ROM's and replace them one at a time. Your set still may have issues.

I dumped his ROMs....

1. Verified against RomIdent (twice)
2. Verified against MAME (twice)
3. Installed and PLAYED his dumped ROMs in MAME without a problem.

The only thing not done with them was to install them on a known working boardset.
(possible if need be though, just don't have one of my own)

worth a try.. I will say however.. adjusting that power supply is a BITCH ! what a messed up PS to adjust...

I should find someone local with a DK and try my board in theirs to see... although when I say local.. I'm the only one around here for about 40 miles that I know of..

Any one near me with a working DK to try my board in ? :) Dunno why Kevin I didn't think of just sending the whole board when checking those ROMs... oh well, live and learn.. :)

Funny, he told me he was checking them for you and I asked if you had sent the whole board set, "ahh no".. I was all ready to dig in, dang it !
Nothing says you can't do it now though.

yeah.. I was considering it.. and sure appreciate the offer...

I also have a DK jr board that prob has some ROM problem as well.. I bought it last year, it boots up w/ picture, etc.. but I never worked on it ... That was next after this DK got fixed...

I had emailed Dick Millikan about sending both boards to him when this first came up... I thought maybe could save on shipping or something by sending both at once

but was hoping to get the DK working to save the money... :)

I should go plug in the DK jr and see what its doing now... but its about 0 w/ wind chill outside.. I remember it froze on a screen and the sound was messed up...

but.. back to DK.. :) I'm looking the boards over w/ my light again now....

hey.. can I use a nintendo to jamma adapter to test this DK board in a jamma cabinet?

right now it doesn't NOT use the edge connector.. do I just use the adapter on the edge connector and NOT hook up any of the other plugs it uses now?

think it would work for testing purposes??

Ok, I've heard of such rainbow cable.. but not sure I know what it is...

the only extra cable I see in the machine is a multi colored one that looks as if it plugs into the 7P sou spot on the power supply... it is not currently being used. and not sure where it plugs on the other end... its just lying in the machine right now.

That the one ? :)

Rainbow cable is roughly 6" long and looks like a rainbow.

ok.. mudmantim is sending me a jamma adapter and rainbow connector to try...

btw.. all the cables look like that one ! :)

so.. after using the rainbow connector.. do I disconnect the two gry ribbon cables between the two boards?

and then just to figure out where it plugs into on each board.. should be hard.. I imagine it can only plug into one spot on each board...

No, the rainbow cable is only to provide power between the two boards. The gray ribbon cables still need to be connected.
