DK problem w/ video !

ONLY ADJUST THE +5V, the +5I is current and should not be messed with.

There is a short interboard wiring harness in there IIRC, make sure it is still connected at both ends.

Okey Dokey.. errrr Dokert...

will check...

** ok.. apparently you can't check w/ ground probe to the PS case... put in on the wire harness grounds and all test good..
+5 is now +5.22

on the wire harness.. will reinstall and hope it stays there on the chips... then onto finding a Z80

Ok..

WELL !

I got it back together.. I have 5.02 on the chips now..

and the screen is pretty messed up ! Boots to the high score screen...

then after a few seconds.. goes to level one, and the music plays a few notes repeatily...

sometimes the screen flips UPSIDE down ! lots of graphic problems... etc..

:)

so.. I'm guess next picking up a new Z80 and trying that... ?

Any one know if I need a certain variety of the Z80 ? or are they all the same ?

DK 2 board set... wanna get one coming soon...

tks...

The letter at the end designates speed, and they are backwards compatible from what I understand.

Bob lists the speeds on his site.

Z80-B seems to work just fine.

The z80 B is a 6mhz...

I think your right.. you can go faster.. but you can't put a slower one in..

and the B is the fastest...

so... B it is... at $4 , I think it safe to spend the extra dollar and get the fastest...

tks...

That's not a Z80 doing that, that's a ROM issue, I've had the exact same issue but I'm not where I can dig through my notes to tell you what one did that.
If it wasn't there before you caused it when pulling and seating them more than likely, I know it's for sure one on the CPU though.

Not sure I understood...

just to clarify... the game DID work, then I removed the board for the cab restore..

put it back.. and the freeze up and other various problems... I only took the roms out after the initial problem..

I'd be interestd in getting the roms checked, reburned, replaced, whatever I need to do..

I'm guessing swapping the Z80 is a cheap and fastest next step that it would be worth the $5 to check...

if you get a second when you get to your notes.. let me know what you think... and suggestions on the next step...

poor DK... not getting any play...

Okay, I looked at my notes and even checked some of my pictures of the issues I've worked and from your description it sounds like 5B is the current issue.

A bad or even missing 5B will flip the screen during attract mode and make all sorts of random stuff on the screen off and on.

You can check by removing the 5B and powering up to make sure its basically the same problem, a half working or corrupt one could slightly change things but you should get a general idea if that's your problem area.

Let us know.

5 b on the cpu board ? ah, I'll go check.. maybe there isn't one on the vid board..

will let yo know..

was getting ready to order a z80 from bob...

so if it is the 5B or another Rom... whats the answer? buy one? have mine re 'burned' by someone? something I can get from Bob and place one order to save money?

will get back w/ ya.. tks...

steve

Ok..

just took out 5B... and it does seem more stable..

the game boots up to the high score screen... showing the top scores..

then after a moment or so.. the top 10 players disappear and only the top score on the top of the screen shows.. what does show looks good...

I can't coin up...

but no jumping graphics or stuck sounds, etc...

what we think ?

ok.. well, don't know any one w/ a burner... so I will look there ..

tks...

Supposedly Nintendo ROMs get something called "bit rot" where some of the programming on a ROM gets corrupted.

I am NOT a chip expert, but that is how it was explained to me.

hmmm.... sounds like something my spouse got....

hey... you do realize... once I fix this DK from the dead w/ this ROM..

I will NEVER be able to submit a high score to T.G. ?? another dream gone before my eyes...

Was referring to the very recent thread here about T.G. new rules for DK score submissions...

their list was very specific.. including Roms on the board...

but no worries... My high score of 111k is far from a threat to anyone... :)

Sounds like you got it narrowed down, powering up with low voltage can corrupt the ROM's from what I've read. Seems like every Nintendo I've touched lately have had some ROM issue which is why I started taking notes and pics of problems and fixes.

Ok.. to update..

I sent ALL the socketed ROMS out for testing and they tested ok...

I put them back in and tested for continuity from each rom leg to the solder on the back side of the board..

At first 5B gave 'no continuity' on 3 legs... 2nd and 3 rd time testing, it tested good...

all the rest tested good as well...

putting it back together to test in the game now...
