Yeah, I hear this is common. For me, I'm gonna start at replacing just the plug and work my way up from there.

That's what most folks do. Again, be sure to get the polarity of the blades correct (one is hot, one is neutral, the third prong is ground), and you'll be fine.

Thanks guys

I'll be working off these instructions:
http://www.ehow.com/how_117563_fix-electrical-plug.html

Seems pretty straight forward.

"... connect the grounding wire (green) under the green terminal screw on the grounding prong; attach the black wire (hot) under the brass terminal screw and the white wire (neutral) under the silver terminal screw."

"... connect the grounding wire (green) under the green terminal screw on the grounding prong; attach the black wire (hot) under the brass terminal screw and the white wire (neutral) under the silver terminal screw."

And the White wire (Neutral) is always on the Wide terminal if your replacement end doesn't have the "brass" or "silver" to go by.

If your replacement end does not have a wide terminal or the brass and silver to go by then Neutral (white) is always on the left when looking "at the wall outlet".

Success!

That turned out to be a very simple fix. Thanks everybody for the advice.

The old plug was pretty cool, actually. It had labels inside that said black, white, and ground.

I feel so confident now, I'm ready to do a cap kit. Well, not really. Instead, I think I'll clean out this old Nintendo joystick.

If you have any surplus electronics stores or flea markets around... or a computer recycler, you can get the 12' computer power cables and use them to replace the power cable on the machine.

Those 12' ones are heavy duty file server power cables and work VERY well on arcade games. Most are even color coded properly on the internal wires: Black (hot), White (neutral), and Green (ground).
