Just got a top marquee bracket for my Donkey Kong Junior. It's in good shape, although it could use some paint.

What techniques do you all use when painting these things?

I'm figuring black spray paint. Somebody mentioned Rust-Oleum Aerosol Epoxy (black) as a paint choice. That sounds good enough.

Do you all sand before you paint? If so, what grit? Am I going for total removal of the old paint? If so, do I then follow up with a lower grit paper to make it smooth?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

When repainting metal brackets and such, I always sand them down to bare metal first, otherwise you'll be able to see where the old paint was even after you repaint it. Start with around 150 grit to remove the paint, then use about 220 grit to make it smooth. If sandpaper is not working, I whip out the wire brush attachment on my drill to get the old paint and rust off first, then sand.

Rustoleum in the rattle cans works well, and I've always sprayed it right on the bare metal, without primer. Try to match the original finish as closely as possible. (flat, semi-gloss or gloss) I think the DK Jr. bracket has a quite glossy finish, if I remember correctly.

+1 to what delroy666 said for prep. I use Rust-o-leum Appliance Epoxy to paint them. Put on two coats and follow the directions for recoat time (I believe it is within 1 hour or after 72). As long as the metal is clean they come out looking like a million dollars and the stuff is super durable after it cures.

Ditto on the Rust-o-leum Appliance Epoxy paint! It is good stuff! I use it on just about all the metal trim on my cabs.......

I'm sold on spraying Rustoleum satin black out of a spray gun, thinned with acetone. However, the DK cabinet brackets I've seen usually seem more like a semi-gloss sheen.
