DK Jr - MOLDY BARN FIND edition ... SAFETY & where to begin?

The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed that an arcade cabinet in Michigan was contaminated with Ebola.

As concern over Ebola increases, here is advice from the CDC on how to protect yourself against the illness, especially when working on an infected cab.

Wash hands frequently or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Avoid contact with blood and body fluids of any seller, particularly someone who is sick.

Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected sellers blood or body fluids.

Do not touch the cabinet of someone who has died from Ebola.

Do not touch bats and nonhuman primates or their blood and fluids and do not touch or eat raw meat prepared from these animals.

Avoid online auctions where Ebola cabinets are being sold. The U.S. Embassy or consulate is often able to provide advice on medical facilities.

Seek medical care immediately if you develop fever (temperature of 101.5F/ 38.6C) and any of the other following symptoms: headache, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, or unexplained bruising or bleeding.

Limit your contact with other collectors until and when you go to the doctor. Do not travel anywhere else besides a healthcare facility.

According to the CDC, U.S. collectors should avoid all nonessential travel to Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and take enhanced precautions when visiting Nigeria.

to play it safe, i visited a doctor just an hour ago ...

The Dkjr side art set I got from Quarter Arcade did have the orange border. But I'm not finding on their site anymore.

DAY 2

the top portion is improved from yesterday but that bottom half is gonna need some serious continued TLC. still looking rough. i honestly hope with enough consistency that this thing is gonna be salvageable and safe for the inside of the house eventually.

gonna borrow a leaf blower from someone later today to see if i can't get rid of all that debris in the bottom.

another full coating inside and out with half-water/half-vinegar and back in the sun:

I meant to grab all of those (only grab some of 'em) but when I reached hour 7 of The Gutting of the cabinet, I was so tired I thought "to hell with it, I'll remove these later"

and YES ... there are several things about the Nintendo cabinets that I'm not a fan of BUT those rubberized wires throughout the body of the cabinet are an excellent idea for cable management.

The little rubberized wires used to hold wires are really clever.

Wow. Here I thought that the cabs that I worked on were nasty! Good job so far on the clean up man!

got lucky with another sunny/dry day so ... took the plunge on the wet-wash of the CRT and PCB. seriously wtf this feels wrong

simple green + hose down + some light, compressed air:

Did you do anything to protect the anode hole? I haven't hosed my stuff down yet like this, do it by hand with something. Hopefully it works good for you. :)

You don't have to cover the anode hole. The hole doesn't go inside the tube. A can of compressed air will do the trick blowing out the hole if you are paranoid.

I've washed of a bunch of monitors with simple green and a hose. Works great and totally safe.

wood used for the CP and PS/Iso seems solid, but i'm thinking keep the CP wood and trash/replace the wood for the power stuff. thoughts? maybe i should try to defunk that wood as well ... keep everything as original as possible

(overthinking it here?)

I'd probably replace the wood for the power supply since it looks extra funky and those wood cuts are easy.

But that control panel looks fine from here. (except for the rust on the switch button bracket assemblies and CP latches)

I don't know why people think this is an issue :)

Squeemish noob thing, just like how I won't get under a car I'm restoring when it's on stands. If you don't do something for a living, some hurdles are tough to overcome, so you find safe work arounds. :)

quick silly question ... how the HELLLLLL do you remove these nuts that are rusted on? turning the nut just turns the bolt, and there's nothing on the top of the CP to grab onto since the bolt top is so acute/close to the CP:

I had something similar and I ended up holding the nut with pliers and drilled the head of the bolt. I flattened the top with a file and made a pilot hole with a smaller bit. The second bit needs to be slightly bigger than the bolt and the head comes right off.
