DK Jr - MOLDY BARN FIND edition ... SAFETY & where to begin?

picked up a DK Jr cheap(ish) earlier today, but it is FULL of funk ... what i'm assuming is mold and the remnants of critters past.

should i even keep this thing in the garage? is it even safe? i was gonna gut it (pull PCB, CRT, PS, harnesses, etc etc), put the guts in the garage (is that even ok?) and maybe cover the cabinet with a tarp outside for tonight.

the cabinet itself seems solid, but needs some hardcore hazmat treatment. where do i begin de-toxing this thing? i wanna bring it back from the dead and make it safe to be in a home again.

I found a little bit of mold once on my shed but it was in Arizona where everything is very dry. It depends on your area you may want to cover it with the clear plastic tarp so the sun can still hit it. If it's still cold where you're at you definitely going to need to clean it with pretty harsh chemicals. Unless you're going to call a professional you can start with some Ajax sponges and paint scrapers make sure that you have a painters drop underneath the game. That you can throw away after using it. And by God whatever you do don't bring it in the house. Make sure that you dress up I. some pretty covering clothes goggles, air mask. Don't just get the cheap painter's mask did something that allows for air Exchange. Otherwise you could be sick for two or three weeks.

For mine, moldy water logged cabinets get a commercial ozone machine while tarped for a few hours first. A few hours of Ozone will kill anything you should come across.

1. Remove the ashtray and trash that right away.
2. Remove all artwork (marquee, bezel and CP); clean those up and put aside.
3. Remove monitor. Spray with Simple Green and hose it down. Put aside and let it dry for a week. LOL
4. Remove PCB(s). I'd spray and hose those too and put them aside.
5. Remove the power. Ditto as above.
6. Put on the hazmat gear and clean/bleach the crap out of the cabinet inside and out. Might want to repeat this step several times.
7. If it was my cab, I might want to seal the interior wood or paint it. YMMV

I would be surprised if it doesn't clean up well. Most cabs can be revived from neglect.

Gotta lick the insides. It could be mold, it could be a decomposed hooker Iggy has slain. If it tastes like aids, its mold. If it tastes like mold its, a hooker. If its mold just burn the cabinet and buy another one,but be sure to film that though and put it on youtube for experiments sake. If its a decomposed hooker just clean the insides with bleach and then promptly place a new hooker in place so they can decompose and the cycle can start again.

that literally was my initial hunch actually ...

Strip the cab....and spray bleach in that sucker...wipe...repeat several times...leaving the beach time to really soak into wood...as long as the cab isn't mdf or particle board the bleach won't hurt it and it will dry out eventually..I've seen way worse cabs exposed to mold, water, and god knows what else..just patience and time...

For your safety..wear a mask, goggles, and gloves..your skin, eyes, and respiratory system will thank you.

As someone who has tackled these types of cabs wayyyyy too many times:

- Usually mildew not mold.
- Shop vac works wonders
- Spraying compressed air gets rid of cacked on gunk.

Do these outside. Wear protection.

I am doing one of these now!

Same thing, bt mine had much more mouse activity.

I got simple green 3 which kills every kind of infestation or bacteria on earth.

My only question is how the heck do I get at the top area behind the marquee light to clean?

have you guys ever seen satan's fetid, cavernous butthole? have you ever seen it, and voluntarily considered stepping inside it? well, i did today. and it was horrible

stripped it, gutted it, wiped it down inside and out, sprayed it down inside and out several times with a half water/half vinegar mix (was gonna do bleach, but read in several places that the bleach only ends up addressing surface nastiness).

everything is baking in the sun right now to commence stage 1 decontamination. i'll probably hit it several times more throughout the week with the vingear mix to realllllly make sure all the funk is KIA. do i need to use something stronger during this detox phase?

dead tired at this point though. will re-tarp the cabinet outside and move the guts into the garage tonight. will have to hose down the CRT and PCB, disassemble the power block and CP, etc etc later. i'm beat.

i'm guessing you gotta remove the rear exhaust grills at the back top of the cabinet and spray like crazy in there.

Nice to see yours is a complete shitshow like mine! Haha.
I'll subscribe here to watch your progress.

I accomplished much of the same today. It was a balmy 50F today so i could finally get back to working outside.

heh, back atcha on the subscribe thing :)

and yeah it's like 64F and dry/sunny here. had no plans to do this today but i figured i'd be foolish not to get rolling on it with perfect anti-mold/mildew/whatever weather outdoors

it's actually a combination of several things, including stupidity, ineptitude, and slothfulness

if i did this kinda thing regularly, i'd likely invest in the right equipment for it. gambled a bit here so we'll see

if i'm updating this thread from the ER tomorrow, then we'll know :)

side-note ... i just put repro'd side art on my good DK Jr and noticed the side-art i applied has no orange border like the original in the pic :( oh well

You're brave. I used a full cbrn respirator when handling nastiness like that.
