Disney in Talks With New Writer for 'Tron: Legacy' Sequel

While 2010's Tron: Legacy didn't get a lot of love from the critics, the movie made enough at the global box office (just over $400 million) to warrant a sequel; in the end, it was the people who bought tickets to the movie that mattered the most after all.

Disney hired David DiGilio to work on the screenplay in June 2011, but not much was heard of the sequel until now. The turmoil at Disney Studio and the subsequent change in leadership at the top may have contributed to the delay.

The good new is that the sequel, aka Tron 3, is still alive at Disney, but the script is in need of more work.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is looking to bring on Jesse Wigutow to work on the revisions. The two parties are currently in talks.

Tron: Legacy starred Jeff Bridges, Garret Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde. It's unknown at this point what the third movie is about or if those three will return for the sequel.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Tron: Legacy, is currently attached to direct. Kosinski's next movie, the Tom Cruise-starrer Oblivion, is scheduled to come out on April 19, 2013.

Everyone bags on Tron: Legacy, but I was thoroughly entertained. The original is a bit boring to me if I'm being honest. I still like and own it, but I find myself watching the sequel more often than the original.

All things considered I thought Tron Legacy was pretty bad ass. It's also one of the best 3D Blu-Ray translations out.

Personally I liked Tron Legacy. Yes it's a little slow but it's a nice pace in the world of Hollywood hand held camera jerk action movies. It really does look good in 3D too and so does Gem.

Personally I loved it and I'm looking forward to another sequel!

BTW, I hope they paint Olivia Wilde's clothes on again! I would love to logic probe her!

Well great, I just bought a logic probe today, and now every time I go to use it I am going to picture Barney the dinosaur trying to hump Olivia Wilde.

I've had this nagging notion that if they had just gone with the projected faces from the teaser rather than what they ended up with, it would have done (and been received) better. The whole young Flynn thing was just too inconsistant. There's a couple shots in the EOL club when Clu goes to retrieve the disc and it really looks like a young Jeff Bridges. Why they couldn't achieve that throughout the rest of the film, I have no idea ($$?). I did like how they kept close to the original 'Heart of Darkness' theme from an early draft but instead of Flynn going off the deep end, it was his creation that caused it. I could have done without the gratuitous self referencing. I'm betting a third will be produced, but it'll be at least 2015 or later.

Garrett Hedlund Set for 'TRON: Legacy' Sequel

Most of the updates on a TRON: Legacy sequel (or TRON 3, whichever you prefer) from the past year have been provided by Tron himself, actor Bruce Boxleitner. The slow progress is partly due to Legacy's moderate box office success – it turned a profit, but not as much as Disney wanted – and lukewarm reception from the general moviegoing population; though, some members of the fanbase were much more pleased and have been anticipating the new installment for years now.

Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski has been busy making the sci-fi flick Oblivion with Tom Cruise (check out the trailer), which is the other main contributing factor holding up development on another TRON. Kosinski is regarded as essentially a lock to come back for the Legacy sequel; the same goes for stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde (should the project indeed happen, that is).

Hedlund was promoting next week's Jack Kerouac adaptation On the Road when Next Movie pressed him for details concerning the third TRON installment. The actor confirmed that he is indeed onboard, but otherwise kept quiet when it came to revealing more about the project – simply saying that "Disney's very excited. That's about that. You know, yeah, I'm very excited, Disney's very excited."

Disney is said to have put the Legacy followup on the fast-track for development, now that it has recruited Jesse Wigutow to revise the previous script draft drawn up by David DiGilio (Eight Below). Earlier this year, Boxleitner suggested that principal photography should begin sometime in 2014; although current rumors back that claim up, nothing is set in stone yet (officially, that is).

The Legacy sequel was addressed on a recent SR Underground Podcast episode, where the SR crew consensus seemed to align with the feelings of you average non-hardcore TRON fan. That is, complaints about story and content aside, Legacy does offer up enough in the way of enjoyable spectacle and dazzling effects eye candy to justify a return trip to 'The Grid'; hopefully, one that builds on the plot and character elements introduced in Legacy.

Hedlund's return indicates that could very well happen; not to mention, the door's been left wide open for Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight Rises) to expand on his Legacy cameo and become the central antagonist in the sequel. So, all things considered, there is potential for TRON 3 to be an improvement on its predecessor.

As long awaited sequels go, I think this one did well. I can't wait for the next Tron movie.

How often is a movie that came out over 20 years after the original actually a good movie?

I think it really helps that I'm a fan of Daft Punk, and I think they did an excellent job with the whole soundtrack... the movie is just visual/auditory art.

I don't know, but it sure didn't happen in the case of Tron Legacy. Yes, I know there are other opinions about that...

I would be really surprised if Disney put the effort into another big budget Tron movie and marketing campaign. I think the acquistion of the Star Wars franchise casts a lot of doubt on a Tron sequel. It seems more likely they will focus their live action efforts on Star Wars, which is more likely to make big profits for the studio than any Tron sequel.

Bruce Boxleitner is not a credible source of information about the studio greenlighting a $300-$400 million investment.

I wouldn't expect it until at least 2016. That's a six year gap between films which is asking a lot for most franchises.

More speculation, but some fun stuff released today...

TRON 3 Update from Director Joseph Kosinski
Talks Daft Punk, Time Passed, Etc.

Please tell people the status of another Tron sequel.

Kosinski: Well the only reason to go back, for me and I think for anyone involved would be if we could do something truly spectacular. We've been talking about it for a couple years and there's always been this idea, a big idea, in the back of my head that we've been talking about. The idea itself, the notion of what the next Tron could be, is exciting enough that it would be worth going back to do it. Obviously we hinted some things at the end of Legacy, it's kind of there for people to see what that potential is. So we just want to make sure that we have a script that delivers on that promise on an epic scale. I've said it would have to be our Empire Strikes Back for me to come back and for me to pull the whole team back together. I think we do have that idea. We do have the idea that feels big and really blows the doors off this franchise. It's hinted at promises of something for two movies now, for thirty years, so it's time to deliver on that. But the script's got to be at a level that makes it worth going back for, because it's a lot of work to make a movie like this and it's a multi-year project. So we've got our writer Jesse Wigutow on it right now writing, and fingers crossed if it all comes together, as we hope it will, there could be another Tron in the next few years, and it's going to be awesome.

My understanding is the studio is very enthusiastic about continuing Tron. Obviously they have new leadership under Alan Horn, have you actually talked to Alan and said, "How do you feel about Tron?"

Kosinski: I haven't talked to him directly. I mean, Sean Bailey was my producer on Tron, now he's the president over there at Disney. So Disney has their full support behind it, which is great, but again it's got to be the right story. It's got to be a script that's up to snuff and worth going back for. The idea's there, the ambition's there, the excitement's there; but we need to have all the pieces in place before they would ever pull the trigger on that. So we'll see. We'll see what happens.

Obviously you'll be done with Oblivion in April, then you'll go on tour with it, then it will be a question of what project you want to do next. Do you think that there is a real chance that Tron could be the next project, or do you think there might be something that goes in first?

Kosinski: There is certainly a chance, like I said; we're writing the script now. Sometimes with these things all the pieces fall into place. I mean, we've been talking about this for years and we don't have the script now, but sometimes things fall into place very quickly, and if everything lines up it could happen. That's all I can say, it's too early.

As I've mentioned many times, I loved the soundtrack, do you think that you would be able to get Daft Punk back again to do it?

Kosinski: When it comes to building the team up for soundtrack they would absolutely be my first call. As to whether or not they would do it, it depends on what they're doing at the time. They are very methodical in how they pick their next project, and they would only do it if they felt that they could dedicate themselves a hundred percent to that. I know they have another album coming out, I'm sure that's going to be their next big project, which I assume is going to be followed by a massive tour. So, you know, hopefully if they've got the time and the creative willingness to dive back in. Remember, there are a lot of tracks that they created that I still have that I wasn't able to fit into Tron: Legacy. So we've already got a head start on some great tracks for the future, which I'm really excited about. Like I said, they would be my first call.

I actually don't know how the soundtrack sold. Did it sell well?

Kosinski: It did. In fact, where is it? I have a gold record here.

Which is very unusual for soundtracks.

Kosinski: Yes

Where's my gold record? Is it in there (he asks his assistant in another room. She say's it's in storage)?

Kosinski: My gold record was delivered to me on the Oblivion set; it was in my trailer one day. Disney sent it over, Sean Bailey sent it with a very nice note that it sold whatever gold is, that must be a million copies I guess? And it was the highest selling soundtrack since the last Star Wars, The Revenge of the Sith. So that's the highest soundtrack in seven years, or whatever that is. Like I said, that was a really wonderful thing; it was everything we wanted it to be.

From a design perspective, because I know you're very passionate about design, have you already been thinking of cool ships and cool new additions to the Tron universe that you've been doodling when you have some time? Or is it still just in the brain and not on paper yet?

Kosinski: It's definitely there. I don't want to say too much about it but the goal would not be to simply re-use. We're not going to re-use the assets from Legacy, that's no fun. If we're going to do to it we're going to reinvent all over again and it's going to be a whole new generation for reasons that are very story-driven. That's all I can say.

Do you see a sequel starting moments from when the last one ended or do you foresee some time passing before the next chapter might start?

Kosinski: I think time has passed. It feels like we're kind of real-time in step. So however much time has passed since Legacy came out would also have transpired in the real world. So it will still be contemporary. So let's say if the Tron sequel comes out in 2015, then four or five years have passed since the last movie.

i know a little birdie that told me its already gonna happen. the information I got from a guy who works and knows the people working on it :)
its gonna happen fella's ! Tron Legacy made enough profit to continue the franchise.
Cillian Murphy, Garrett Hedlund are already on board. The script is being worked on as we speak. They are even trying to get Daft Punk back, but sources say it might not happen due to them working on there new album, we will see :)

I really liked Legacy a lot and I'm a HUGE fan of the original. I hope they do one more and if it is at least as good as Legacy then I'll be very pleased.

Yes...I don't know why people dog on Legacy. I loved the movie. Legacy is what got me hooked on Tron in the first place. Saw Legacy...had to re-watch the classic. Got hooked on the classic...bought Tron arcade...then an EDOT. Now I want a Tron pin!

Man, what a talented guy to direct the movie and do all the music.
