Discs of Tron LightCovers

Hey folks. I 'm digging up a thread from the past, but had to ask:

After being one of the first to purchase this (at least the first in this thread I think), I stepped away for a bit and only got to installing my piece today. I immediately noticed it was severely warped upwards on the left side. I was able to get two of the eight screws in fairly easy. To get the third top screw in I had to severely bend the piece, to the point where I feel I'm going to crack it.

There is absolutely no way I could get any bottom screws in, as one is almost 1" off.

I could re-drill holes in the cab, but even with my bending the peice back it still looks skewed next to my CP.

Did anyone else see this? Here is a pic; its actually not that noticeable in the photo; it had a much harsher bend up on the left side before I flexed it to get the third screw in:

Mine wasn't warped like that, but it wasn't bent all the way, so it couldn't fit either. I was on the list to get a second one, but after waiting for a while, I decided to take matters into my own hands. It can be reshaped with a heat gun. You have to use the heat sparingly...gently waving it back and forth over just one side of it (i.e., the left side), flip it over and then heat the back side of that same side. I applied heat for just 4-5 seconds, then would attempt to bend it gently, then apply more as needed. If done correctly, you'll just barely be able to bend it. Try to get the worst of the bend out of it, then try it in. Then repeat the process. I think it took me about 3-4x before I got it close enough so I could almost get it installed. When I got it that close. I heated the whole thing back up so it was about 50% towards "bending heat" and then actually placed it in my machine and heated it in place the rest of the way so I could get the last screw in. It's not as scary as it sounds.

Thank you for the info Derek. The heated bending seems a bit sketchy to me, but perhaps I'll give it a try.

I just re-read most of this thread; should have done so before posting.

Did anyone who received one of that first defective batch actually receive a replacement? I got the impression from reading here that the first batch was all defective, and replacements were automatically being sent?

I know its been a while, but I'd still like to get the correct piece.

I was in the first batch and I don't think anyone got one, but I could be mistaken. They were made by being heated and bent. I certainly would understand your hesitation at doing it, but I got tired of waiting.

I bashed the piece a bit up above, but I have to be fair: The look of this thing over blacklights is nothing short of INCREDIBLE. I never realized how bad off my old cover was. I'd even added some flourescent coloring myself when I first got the game and thought it looked pretty good.

When I put this new cover over my blacklight and turned it on it was one of those "Ahhhhhhhh (singing)" type moments. It's really very nice; seems very substantial and high quality. I just need one that fits.

Jeff I got a replacement from Rich, and it was actually worse than the original. I managed to heat and stretch the original and it came out pretty well.

Thanks Rich. I have this vision of the colors and graphics shriveling and distorting like when you get the heat gun very close to a cpo (while removing).

I may give this a shot though; I really do not want to put that old cover back on my dot after seeing the new.

Derrick (Jedidentist) was right on with the heat and technique, I took a different path but keept the heat and technique in mind.
Here's what I did, lens was about 1/2 inch short and the curve was off.
While waiting for the replacement I checked with Rich and asked if I could try to straighten it out and he gave me the ok. I put the bad lens over my original on a piece of wood to serve as a guide, screwed them down using top holes, then I looped cable ties in the bottom holes of both lens. I then started the heating process using a heat gun in a back and forth motion over the area of the curve, as the lens heated I slowly adjusted the ties and was able to pull down the bad lens close where it needed to be, I had to use a small screwdriver as a wedge to pull the lens the final 1/8th inch or so. I had to have my wife take over the heating chore while I adjusted the ties. Like Derrick said a little heat goes a long way just be careful, I did get one spot a bit too hot early on and it began to bubble luckily it was near the edge and it's not too noticeable.

wow, nice tutorial :)

gracias.

Agreed; very cool Rich; thank you. Two of my four lower screw holes on my old overlay are missing, as a big peice was actually cracked off, but this will at least partially work for me. I did reach out to Rich for a replacement too. I'm going to order the translight and side-art, and hope he can include a corrected cover.

Thanks again guys.
