Discs of Tron LightCovers

LOL
I wasnt on planning on selling the LED frame
I was thinking that there might be more suitable/affordable options.
but that translit is being lit by it and it looks great.

or maybe Im just way off base thinkin 2bills is alot for something like this?
I havnt confirmed if the dimensions will fit inside a cab
Ill pull those specs out and post them soon.

But anyone got any ideas for a better backlight source...
the uniformity of something like this LED frame is ideal and its only 12vdc
over say just the flouesent tube.

Well.... I suppose I am a bit enthusiastic....... It's just that I recently picked up My EDOT (factory cut) from up north and I've only got room for a couple of machines in my garage/future game room so I want to bring them back to full minty status. So I'm super excited about the restoration project! I'll be posting some pics and I little video I edited about the whole adventure of getting it down to SOCAL from Oakland in a few days. I did look back there (inside the machine) and it is a pretty tight fit..... I work in the animation industry and I've been looking at and some really flat LED light boxes some of my co-workers are using from japan and I thought "man that would light up the backdrop super-bright!" but I've got no clue what the voltage and specs are. Just a thought.

$200.00 doesn't seem to expensive to me to make a childhood dream come true!

I also ordered the UDOT plastic cover and added a CPO, this will look sweet when I'm done! Can't wait to get the shirt either.. way cool!

I would think something could be creatively reconstructed to give you a much better \
illumination back there.
http://panels.lipco.net/product.html
the panels I posted above come 2 ways framed and framless
I dont have the outside dimensions but I could find out.
also the power listed on the website is diffent than the one that was shown to me.
as they were using a 12vdc adapter.
the only issue beside cabinet width for fit is the "pic height" is listed at 16.5"
the DOT translight is 17"

I would think that maybe some nice translucent white plex and some 12vdc
led strips on the back side might be a good alternative.
I used these on the tron video pinball machine and they worked great.

TRON DOT/EDOT background

I can't wait to see what the latest prints look like, Rich. I think I should point out that this particular repro has not been made in the standard fashion. While a scan was used for accuracy and placement, every pixel is brand new. The floor was created as a flat vector object and then lofted in 3D, and tilted back to match the perspective in the original. the match was not too easy considering the original was hand painted. then the buildings were also traced as vectors and then painted with smooth gradients and so on to match the original feel. lots of care was then taken making all the edges glow and come alive with color and electricity. Again, every effort was employed to match the feel of the original, but a bit of license was taken to take advantage of todays more advanced graphics and printing capabilities. I personally don't feel religiously attached to making a 100% match to this piece of art from the 80's. What I do care about is to see that the spirit is bang on and it can shine at its best. As an example, I've replaced my reflective mylar with mirrored plexi - as it is cleaner and doesn't get scratched and worn like the cheaper material. It's not 100% accurate, but I think it's better, and would be approved by the original team had they been allowed to spend the extra money on the cabinet.

same goes for the updated rear lighting of the translite.

On that note, as for the discussion about making this as a poster that is lit by one of those LED frames -I love this idea. In fact, I propose an extension to this idea as follows:
I can create two layers: layer one: Sark on his platform, the blue wall lines (and cursor) as well as the gray floor. layer two: Tron on his platform.
Rich would then print each of these layers onto separate clear plexi sheets, the same size as the BG print. The BG print would be mounted on the LED illuminated frame, and then using spacers, each of the two game-print plexis woulf be mounted in front of it, a few inches apart. So you would end up with this layered 3D effect that would be shown off as you moved your head from side to side. The result would be pretty stunning I think. I might go so far as to mount a DOT marquee in another LED frame a few inches above the game play piece.

Would anybody be interested in this collectible being made? Rich, should we do this together? I can't imagine the printing process would be too cheap, but it would be a show stopper. We can't all have our own EDOTs after all ;)

lightcycle game...

.... BTW, I forgot to mention that my company Black Powder Media just released our Tron lightcycle game on the web (same day as the Legacy release). This was a game made for Disney but shelved due to their "hide the 'old' tron until we make money on the new tron" policy. anyway, we wanted to get it publicly available so here it is:

play it now before we get the "cease and desist" order!!

Hey I'm totally down with whatever DOT related craziness you guys come up with! Please just keep me in the loop on this stuff and I'll happily fork over some $$! Would love to see a mock up/concept of the poster! On a related note is there any way to repro the lenticular DOT marquee? You know so that the disc looks like its moving back and forth?

Translight backlight

Hey BTW below is a link to the lightbox I mentioned on this thread a month or so ago. It looks like its got a pretty thin profile. The DOT cab would have to be modded for sure to fit it in and I have absolutely no idea what kind of power it requires. But it sure would be cool to see that city backlit by one of these! I work out in burbank in the animation industry and while most of us have made the transition to working on cintiques a few of my co-workers who still love rocking the old pencil and paper bought these for its light weight and super thin profile.

Sweet can't wait, and just in time as my DOT arrives Monday :)

What are the odds that you would have an extra (non-preordered) upright? Mine isn't horrible, but I don't want to regret missing my opportunity....

those light covers are real perty rich.

any idea what the MARCH T-SHIRT OF THE MONTH is gonna be??

i still gotta get the space invaders one too (looks good in blue). chris
