I wonder if anybody out there knows ( short of buying an original cabinet) how I can play that classic game "Discs of Tron"? I believe there was something available on XBox/PS2 but can't seem to make any progress. My memories of the the game from 1983 are magical; it was way ahead of its time, and I would prefer to not to have that piece of rubbish called "Tron: Legacy" to interfere with my impressions of the original. If anyone has any advice I would be eternally grateful & would be happy to pay a reasonable price for the hardware.
Cheers!

The original arcade game came in two versions, a normal upright and an environmental enclosure in which the player stands. Both are pretty rare and highly desirable, making it an expensive game when you can find one for sale. It is lots of fun, but difficult to play on anything but the original controls. It can't be played on most MAME machines because of the complex controls. There is a flight stick with a finger trigger and a thumb button and the spinner can be pushed down or pulled up to aim the disc in later levels. Your best bet is to find someone local who will let you play on their machine.

Try Tron 2.0 Killer App for the Gameboy Advance. It has Discs of Tron and the original Tron.

DOT is a beast even in emulation. Just the controls alone would cost around $350-400 and then you wouldn't even have a cabinet or computer yet. Of course the mirror effect and all the artwork is basically impossible to re-create but advanced versions of mame and a computer with some power can reproduce the bezel and mirror effect within the computer monitor.
DOT is just one of those pipe dreams for me, too expensive and complicated to emulate and way too expensive and elusive to buy for real....yet. :)One day...

DOT was one of the games I really wanted but thought I'd never own, and I didn't even put it on my want list. One day it just happened. Some guy put it on CL for an insane amount of money and I made a reasonable offer. Then I showed up with an unreasonable (less!) amount of money. I was able to smooth talk him down on the spot. I may have even left money on the table. Driving home with that game was unreal.

My other plan was to make a swappable Tron/DOT control panel for my MAME cabinet. Hasn't happened yet as I have both real cabs, but I still want to do it. The parts are available, I just need to find the time and money.

Nothing gets better than the real deal.

I love that cab.

Disc of Tron is on some of the larger xxxx in 1 multigames -

I have it on my 1315 in 1 and just tried to play it...not sure how to configure the controls.

Anyone have any ideas? If so, might be interesting to compare notes....

Not sure where you're located, but you can always just come to Nashville if you're not too far away and play it at Game Galaxy.

Yes, I unfortunately saw "Tron: Legacy" and hated almost every minute of it.
If I hadn't been with my family I would have walked out for sure.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion so I'm not bagging on you. Just curious what, exactly, you hated so much about it.

Yup you can play it in other places, but anything short of the original cab is pretty much rubbish.......

D.o.t.

Thanks to everyone who has made a reply to my request.
I wasn't expecting such detailed & well informed responses.
Especially thanks to the gentlemen that went to the trouble of posting photos of the original cabinets etc. Yes, I guess the only real answer would be to own the real machine, as I remember the controls were critically important to be able to play at any sort of level.
For the "Tron: Legacy" fans, sorry, but I just just couldn't follow it & I guess I might have been expecting something that would appeal to people like me who thought the original was cool when I was 18, but was hoping that things might have moved on since then. However, the parachute jump near the beginning was cool & that "Silver Chick" was Hot! Also, anything in 3D and made with such a level of technical skill will always be impressive.
Well, I may get the app. for Game Boy, or visit the Arcade in Nashville one day!

That Disney computer game is awesome!

It's not quite the same and you may think it's rubbish but I think this is kinda fun:

Thanks for posting the link!

Had a little trouble loading the player, but once I did the new games are really fun. A little short but I had a blast playing them.

PS- I was also disappointed with the movie. I paid the extra and saw it in IMAX.
Not sure what I expected, but effects were great, nice new concepts, but the story line was weak.
Looks like Disney set it up for a sequel.
Knowing Disney, they are probably going to add some sort of theme park attraction based on the the movie...
